Believe you me I'm steamed at this whole thing. But these calls to go into various bookstores and shoplift copies of The New Yorker off the shelves to teach the magazine some sort of lesson just aren't right. I know it seems like a decent idea to people without morals because there probably aren't any security tags to set off the alarms, and that it's easy to go to the little coffee shop inside the bookstore and pretend that you already bought it and are just reading it before you leave with it, but you have to think of the law and in this case the law says that you should not shoplift, even if it's really funny and seems easy to get away with. Just because it's easy to tuck into another magazine that you have bought, or inside a free local events newspaper that they might be giving away for free near the front door, doesn't mean it's yours to take. Please. Don't shoplift. It was irresponsible of them to print this cover, but it's illegal to break the law to make them pay for it.

3. now we need a thread urging people not to shoplift?
Edited on Mon Jul-14-08 08:38 AM by TexasObserver
Why would you start a thread about it, instead of simply addressing it directly in the thread where such comments occurred? Do you really think this is something anyone - even the person who suggested it - is going to do?

Every thought on this topic doesn't require its own thread. Why not stick the thought in the thread where someone made that suggestion? You're giving the topic more attention than it is due. There isn't one reader here in 1000 who would take seriously the suggestion to shoplift. Hell, the person who suggested that may not even be a "real" DUer.

4. Actually, no one at this site has been stupid enough to call for shoplifting.
Edited on Mon Jul-14-08 08:42 AM by LoZoccolo
And I think you're right too about calling attention to it, so I won't post any place that I've seen this suggestion and give it more attention. Thank you for the advice.

5. Cool. Thanks.
I had not seen it here, so didn't know what you were talking about.

I do think it's the kind of suggestion the OTHER side would make through its dirty tricks division.

They would love to create a phony spin off story of outrage about thieving Democrats!

I sincerely believe the right never sleeps when it comes to creating phony stories about us and our candidates. Lying and dirty tricks are their biggest strategems.

11. BTW, stealing magazines makes the mag more money...
if the mag isn't returned, the shopkeeper has to pay for it so the mag gets paid anyway.

And it will now claim newstand sales are up to raise ad rates.

14. not to mention
that many stores have a no tolerance policy toward shoplifting. You could end up in the pokey or at least paying bucks to a lawyer.

15. Turn the magazine around in its place
People will not see it and be less likely to buy.
