Question: Weren't there many Right Wingers who thought Colbert was real?
Edited on Mon Jul-14-08 09:04 AM by uponit7771
I remember almost a year ago a number of right wingers sourcing the Colbert show because they thought he was real, some even going to the point of sourcing Colbert in editorials.

Americans in general don't do nuance and I don't think right wingers are stupid it's just that it seems they have a culture that says smart people are viewed negatively so anyone who looks both ways before crossing the street isn't someone they'd want to be around or can relate to.

Thank you for your input

3. Yeah, that's why I think the NY cover fails to communicate...the satire has to be obvious or they...
...don't get it.

Were political junkies to a certain degree, we're up on the tactics of the right wingers and the media Jamal\Janet American aren't...too busy paying bills

2. Agreed
We (Americans) don't "do" nuance very well. And yes, smart people are viewed negatively. They're called "elitist."

That's because up until recently, education was the great equalizer.

8. YEAP! It's still surprising in this country that less than 50 percent of the people have a college..
...degree.

A good portion of that is because there was no culture centered around getting a higher education due to the ability to get out of high school and work a job that would feed a family.

Those jobs are now in the low double digit percentile of our economy and are leaving the double percentile rate.

4. Many people just don't get satire.
Look at the many times someone has picked up an article from the Onion, thinking it's true.

5. My mom still thinks he is for real.
She says she likes to watch Jon Stewart because he is very liberal and Colbert because he is very conservative. She is dead serious and republican.

10. She does not get it.
Really, she firmly believes that he is for real. Even when I pointed out that he started out on the Jon Stewart Show.

My step-father always says, "Your mother is always right. She's never wrong, she's right." This is what I'm up against. :eyes: I refuse to talk politics with her. We only see them once or twice a year. I do not take emails from her that have anything to do with politics, I put a stop to that long ago.

11. YES, that was the guy...thanks. You know, Delay isn't really stupid he's greedy and crooked and that
...makes him look stupid....k, Delay was a bad choice...well...you get my point.

He SHOULD be smart enough to know as a politician that Colbert was satirizing him but wasn't.

You know, this subject is scaring the crap outtah me...there are some people leading this country who are no smarter than a box of wet bricks...

sigh....Jan 2009 couldn't come quick enough

15. I remember that when I was done laughing,
I was suddenly horrified. It was like... that guy is making laws for the rest of us?! Geezus! :banghead: I too am amazed at how dumb so many people are.

Maybe we'll actually get an intelligent president this time. Six more months. We've gotta hang in there.

9. Does that mean we have to condemn Colbert and Comedy Central?
Because not all people get that its satire.

12. No, of course not...it's just that it took a while for a good portion of right wingers to get the...
...satire.

Look, the NY-er is prolly not thinking about the fact that politicos will get the cover but that's a very very very small percentage of America right now.

18. By election day, the smarter RWers will "get" the cover also.....

Yes... I realize that "smarter" and "RWers" put together constitutes an oxymoron.

17. Anybody who thought Colbert was real was NEVER going to be an Obama voter..... EVER

People who are Obama voters, or POTENTIAL Obama voters, will understand TNY's cover AND Stephen Colbert.
