Over the past few days John McCain has suffered several blow backs due to missteps and ignorant comments made by top surrogates.
Phil Gramm did some of the worst damage by saying that America has become a “nation of whiners” when it comes to the economy. Gramm is McCain’s top adviser on the economy and helped to form his policy positions on the economy since the summer of 2007.
“You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession. We have sort of become a nation of whiners, you just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline,” Gramm said during an interview.
According to Gramm, Americans who are suffering from job loss, loss of income, and irritability due to home foreclosure are just whining.
Gramm was a close friend to McCain and will continue to be, while he will not be crafting economic policy for the campaign after these comments were made, he will no doubt have a role in this campaign.
This comment shows a complete lack of understanding of the average American struggling to make it in this economy which is in keeping with John McCain on economic issues.
McCain is so out of touch with the average American that he forgets to pay taxes on one of his homes for 4 years because he has too many to keep track of.
Cindy McCain has charged more than $500,000 dollars in one month on her credit card and the couple has more than $225,000 dollars in credit card debt. John and Cindy McCain have charged twice as much on their credit cards in one month than the median American home is worth.
John McCain certainly is a financial elitist compared to the average American citizen. Barack Obama is certainly above the mean as far as income but John and Cindy McCain far exceed the Obamas in wealth.
Last year, Barack Obama made $991,296 dollars, which included royalties from his book, “The Audacity of Hope.” Last year, Cindy McCain made $6 million dollars and her inheritance from the Anheuser-Bush fortune is said to be worth $100 million dollars.
To make matters worse for John McCain, he told the media last week that, “I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself.”
This coming from the same man who called Barack Obama elitist for his comments about some American’s being bitter because they are suffering in a weak economy. McCain believed Obama’s comments to be a “contradiction from what I believe America is all about.” A nation of whiners perhaps?
