The New Yorker cover actually has a title. Can you guess what it is?
Correct answers enter you in a drawing to win a life-time supply of irony.
Cheaters can highlight the white space below this line for correct answer:
the New Yorker's official title of the piece is "the politics of fear" ________________________________

7. Actually, I wasn't being sarcastic--it really could be. |
|
The toon is obviously satire, but is it GOOD satire?
IMO, the toon missed the mark but just by a little bit s I can't really decide.

11. The odd thing is that everyone considers art criticism to be a political matter |
|
The question of intent is not debatable. It is an anti-Republican piece.
As to whether anyone thinks it succeeds or fails, that's a critical question.
Writing angry letters to the New Yorker to complain that an anti-Republican cartoon isn't drawn exactly the way you would like is batty.
It's like saying, "The poem on page 78 sucks! The author could have used more effective imagery. Cancel my subscription."
It's a person's right, but kind of odd behavior.

I also get good satire and bad satire, and the New Yorker fails epically.
Btw, can you tell me what the afro they gave Michelle Obama is supposed to be satirizing?

the afro is one of the cues that it is satire (just got done typing this response elsewhere, ironically). The fact that people want to believe she is some stereotype of the "kill whitey" black panthers. She doesn't look like that but people see here that way in the "politics of fear" (which is the title of the cover, btw).

9. In the minds of those that believe the "politics of fear" |
|
yes, they are. You are smart enough to know the difference between my views and that which is being satirized in the cartoon. Even if you don't think it is good satire, you do realize the images that the racists have.

I remember when afros were cool and straightened hair was a outrage.

13. Republicans don't need to do anything |

The left can destroy our candidate much better than the right ever could. That's what's evil. And what's worse than that are the number of people who refuse to understand it after it's happened so many times.

10. Oh gosh, gee, let me see, golly the cover was just so subtle and all. |
|
And gee, we haven't discussed the horrible smears circulating about Obama a thousand times already so gosh, I'm dazzled by the New Yorker's insight to post a cartoon showing how silly those right wing smears are. Wow. But Mom told me sticks and stones could break my bones but names could never hurt me. Oh, wow, I guess she was right.
OR
Visual imagery can contribute to The Politics of Fear in a stealthy way? Look how we can purport to critique The Politics of Fear while still adding to it?
