I'm not offended by the New Yorker cover, I'm worried |
|
What bothers and worries me is not the satire, but, rather that uniformed (on issues) voters don't "get it". That's what we and Obama should be upset about. As we know, being registered to vote does not mean you're informed of the issues. So if you're not familiar with Obama, the campaign, etc. and you see that cover, it very well may influence your vote.

1. The truth is that a lot of people do not get satire. |
|
We as a nation are not that sophisticated.

2. Uninformed voters don't read the New Yorker. |
|
They read TV Guide and Reader's Digest. Stop worrying. ;)

4. Two responses: 1) Americans are not as dense as you fear. |
|
2) Any Americans who really ARE so dense as to not understand this is satire probably never look at the New Yorker anyway.
Honestly, this is just like when the fundies got their undies in a bunch over "Last Temptation of Christ" or "Da Vinci Code." The more they screamed and whined about it, the more interest they generated, and more people viewed those items than would have had they just not made such a big deal over it.
This is a tempest in a teapot.

10. As I pointed out above they don't need to read it |
|
I haven't read it. I haven't even seen a hard copy of it yet. I saw it for the first time on Yahoo news when I logged out of checking my email. So, no, it doesn't matter if they read the New Yorker or even know what it is for that matter.

6. Do you watch "The Simpsons"? |
|
Homer: "Any mail, Marge?" Marge: "The New Yorker. We were rejected for a subscription again"
It really almost is like that.

Monty, you are right on this. Actually, I am offended but what really bothers me is that this will actually re-enforce an image that some uninformed people have.
