"Fear of Fun".... HuffPost is talking about YOU, DU......

"Oh, no! That New Yorker cover is going to ruin everything for Obama. This is the tipping point. Now he'll never get elected. I'm so disappointed. I had such great hopes. What can I do? Cancel my subscription to the First Amendment?"

From the article: Maybe the New Yorker can redeem itself by publishing an image of John McCain singing "Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran."

That's what I'd like to see, evenhandedness. The NewYorker cover is not 'nothing'. It whittles away at fairness and just opens the door for the next mocking of Obama. Let's see the reaction to McCain's wife drawn as a drug addict or McCain's plane setting the aircraft carrier on fire.

4. Why is disapproval of something always seen by so many as wanting to...
Edited on Mon Jul-14-08 01:48 PM by DeepModem Mom
deny the right to do it? I haven't really commented that much on this controversy, so maybe I'm missing something, but it just seems so knee-jerk, and maybe even a little paranoid.

5. It's a craven cover for blunting criticism for public bed-shits.
Like how racists run the “Don't go all P.C. on me!” game! “Thought police!”, etc.

I'm not supporting a boycott or legal action against The New Yorker, but hey...if they—and their fellow toney ilk over at HuffPo can't deal when someone says something they did, sucked—well...those are pretty weak-assed institutions and people, wouldn't you say? :(

Increase circulation, increase revenue, create buzz and controversy, while pretending that it's a noble calling.

Far as some people are concerned any kind of criticism automatically equals censorship.

Off the mark with YOU maybe.... but read through the hundreds of posts last night...

At least 75% of them didn't "get" the satire.

24. I'd say your percentage is lower
Some just don't find it funny at all. That's the point that many people are trying to make but because many feel that since it's satire there can be no criticsm. A lot of those who you think don't get it do get it, they just don't think it's funny.

And for the ones that don't "get it". Consider the 12% who still think Obama is a Muslim.

26. That 12% was never going to vote for Obama anyway... they wouldn't have voted for ANY Democrat

I write them off.

They are died-in-the-wool Republicans who wouldn't vote for a Democrat ever.... So the fact that they think he's a muslim will make it all the more amusing to see tehir reactions when he wins.

20. shame on YOU, Michelle and Barack
for not being able to have fun about a drawing seen by millions that has you, Michelle, sporting an assault rifle with a giant Afro, and you Barack, who they have wearing the same clothing as Osama Bin Laden, while an American flag burns in the fireplace. Where's your twos sense of humor? Damn... party poopers! And your silly defenders on DU who are outraged for you, well, they're just fuddy duddies!
:sarcasm:

Never mind that the "cartoon" has NOTHING to do with the article inside, and is left standing alone on the cover, without enough articulation in its concept to appear without question as satire, and negates putting an actual right-winger on the cover dreaming/imagining how the Obama White House would be if you got in...

did they even stop to think for one minute how this would make Michelle and Barack feel seeing this cover, especially since there's NO accompanying story about the false things that are spread about them in the media/print/email forwards??? Even for a minute?

30. I agree - I posted this earlier today and think it says a lot about this issue......
My sister lives in TN & I cannot believe the crap she tells me about the way people are in her small town. We grew up in a college town in Ohio so we are not prejudice in the least. She lives half way between Nashville and Memphis. She told me there was one AA family there and they keep to themselves. When Ford ran there were a few people who saw the light but most just turned their heads away and voted for the whitey, just because he was white. Sick! What does this have to do about "The New Yorker" - I think they were only thinking of New Yorker's (or other savoir-faire types) when they allowed this crap to be put on their cover. This will go much further when it comes to people like those in TN or Kentucky, Ohio, and W.V. who don't have the same sense to know the meaning in this so called satirical piece.

I was especially dismayed at using Michelle with the machine gun thrown over her shoulder. Her fist bump I am sure was a family tradition that showed togetherness and love. I don't get the satire of putting her in the picture at all. My call.
