Obama grabs big Midlands lead in race for cash
BY JOSEPH MORTON
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON - So far in this presidential election, Midlands residents are opening their wallets wider for Democrat Barack Obama than for Republican John McCain.

Obama collected about $365,000 from Nebraskans through the end of May, while McCain raised about $155,000.

The struggling economy was topic No. 1 on Monday, with Republican John McCain, left, pushing again for a temporary cut in the federal gasoline tax, and Democrat Barack Obama highlighting his economic proposals, including higher income taxes for wealthy Americans and a $1,000 tax cut for most others.

In Iowa, the gap was bigger. Obama received about $848,000 from Iowans, compared with about $220,000 for McCain.

Those Federal Election Commission figures do not include donors who gave less than $200.

For Obama to have such an edge in Midlands fundraising is in sharp contrast with recent presidential races.

During the same pre-nomination period, Republican George W. Bush collected far more money in Nebraska and Iowa than his Democratic opponents in 2000 and 2004.

7. Best graph ever.
Makes me long for the days of Ross Perot... if only he'd had a better graphic designer.
