"The Nation" strikes back w/cartoon.... and "Democracy on the Net"
This cartoon response to The New Yorker's cover appears in the August 4 issue of The Nation.

It is included in this online article from The Nation, "Pushing Limits--and Proud of It"
http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080721/kvh3

And another very good piece:

Democracy on the Net; Here are links to some of the leading prodemocracy groups working to build a more perfect union:
http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080721/kvh2

DU, let's keep our eye on the prize and win this time.

9. The New Yorker
is a sophisticated mag. that generally supports liberal-progressive causes. And the way they have been supportive of Obama. I'd watch that elitist crap, thats sounds like something the rethugs would say.

11. I'll amend.....
the New Yorker is a "tool", as well. Just less useful.

Their "general support" of liberal-progressive causes is quite limited when compared to the Nation.

Um, "elitist crap" and "rethug", were really quite unnecessary.

They are unbecoming and, in fact, sound quite like something read on less "advanced" sites than DU.

Nice touches:

1.) The knockout “left” hand of Obama. (Attention to detail as Obama is left-handed)

2.) The upside-down Osama painting (signalling “in distress” or from the fall angle of his head-sash, hung by his feet alá a post-death Mussolini)

3.) The busted monocle on ol' Eustace AND that knocked-out tooth on the rug.

Plus, I love that demure “Ring Girl” stance of Michelle's.

This is gonna be FUN! :)

Obama's team 'rejects' this cartoon, like McCain's campaign 'rejected' the New Yorker cover, even given differences in "truthiness" of the cartoons, I just think they aren't going to want to keep talking/rebutting/arguing/extending-debate about cartoons. I think(and Obama's interview on CNN seems to supports imo)that they'd rather keep hitting McCain on the economy (a strong issue for him) and keep attention on his excellent foreign policy speech today (which can help further diminish any McCain strength on this issue)

19. How does this not cast Obama in a worse light than the New Yorker cover?
At least that didn't suggest he was a bully picking on free speech rights... And if anything, Michelle looks even more bloodthirsty in this one.

I don't understand why this issue is being artificially inflated into one that has a real chance of hurting Obama in the general.

20. It could be taken either way...inconsequential in any case...
It's not to be a cover for the Nation, it accompanies an article to which I provided a link.

I think the cartoon simply says, "Obama will kick a little ass, burn your damn magazine, and fly the flag" nothing terribly deep there.

I thought Michelle looked refreshingly ordinary, maybe even Jackie-like with that hair.

lowermanhattanite pointed out, upthread:

Nice touches:

1.) The knockout “left” hand of Obama. (Attention to detail as Obama is left-handed)

2.) The upside-down Osama painting (signalling “in distress” or from the fall angle of his head-sash, hung by his feet alá a post-death Mussolini)

3.) The busted monocle on ol' Eustace AND that knocked-out tooth on the rug.

Plus, I love that demure “Ring Girl” stance of Michelle's.

Anyway, there's a very small chance of this becoming cartoon drama #2, I think.

How in the world does knocking somebody out for making you look like a terrorist (you a foreign one, while making your wife look more like a domestic one complete with billowing afro) turn you into a "free speech bully?"

And if anything, Michelle looks even more bloodthirsty in this one.

I just don't know what to say about that.

Oh, I think that is a riot.

Hopefully all of the posters who were just "intelligent," "urbane" and "savvy" enough to appreciate the "brilliant satire" of the New Yorker cover will not be turned off by this one. But it's likely that they're thinking that the "unwashed masses" who write for and/or read The Nation are just proving their utter lack of sophistication and wit anyway.

My finger hurts from typing all of those quotes....

43. Yes, she does. She's steady, and reflects the magazine and it's mission.
The issues they cover match my interests.

Nothing is sensationalized but they still have enough humor to prevent us from harming ourselves. :-)

And they have a section for educators, and I respect that.

You might consider an online subscription for $18.00, it's greener.

49. I think you guys are missing it- AGAIN.
The article is I think generally pro-New Yorker. In the first paragraph the writer, after listing the NY reasons for carrying the cartoon says he agrees- thoughand he doesn't get a stright stance regarding this comic, he then gives the opinion of 3 cartoonists, only one of which from what I get is against it.

The title of the article is 'Pushing Limits- and Proud of It'. Don't you think that with that title, it would be IN FAVOR, of the provocative piece? YOu are so obsessed in here, you can't see the cartoon is showing Obama attacking a democrat and burning free speech, showing he's not willing to accept satirical criticism.
