Obama Campaign Opens 20 New Field Offices In Virginia

By http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/profile/sargent">Greg Sargent - July 16, 2008, 2:54PM

Here's another real sign that the Obama campaign is dead serious about making a real play for Virginia.

The Obama campaign plans to open 20 new field offices in the state -- and at least five of them are in very red areas where Dems have traditionally feared to tread, Obama's Virginia director of communications, Kevin Griffis, confirms to me.

The Obama team is setting up shop in Winchester and Bristol, both of which are in areas that voted for Bush in 2004 by at least 25 points. Camp Obama is also adding an office in Harrisonburg, which went for Bush by 13 and is in the reliably-red Shenandoah Valley.

There will also be a new office in Castlewood, which is in the coalfields near West Virginia and Kentucky and went for Bush by eight, and in Martinsville, whose surrounding county went for Bush by 13 points.

Obama's Virginia campaign director, Mitch Stewart, says he's hoping to turn the network of field offices into the foundation of an all-out bottom-up effort in the state. "The new offices represent the frame upon which our neighbor-to-neighbor, grassroots campaign will be built," Stewart says.

It's getting interesting.

2. Awesome
I have a great feeling that Obama will take Virginia. If he can improve on the margins in the rural areas and dominate the cities and Northern Virginia, he will win.

3. Damn, and I am not there. My former precinct broke almost
dead even in 2004 for Kerry & Bush, a real anomaly in the redder parts of Albemarle County. The Repube observer had skid marks on his pants when the officials were tallying.

4. Every last penny in McCain's war chest is going to be spent!
He'll need the MSM to continue carrying his water, but if he slips up even once, gets mad on camera, bullies a reporter or shoves somebody in the press, he'll lose a lot of ground with his "base."

7. Kaine for VP
Just wanted to get that in there. I remember reading somewhere the Kaine did well in traditionally red areas.

8. Virginia CAN be won!!!!!
Webb probably won it by a far bigger margin than was officially reported.
With a margin of 10,000 votes, or whatever it was, out of 2 million (!!!!),
it should have triggered an automatic recount. Suddenly George Macaca threw
in the towel and conceded. There is one and only one reason to do that: further
scrutiny of the vote would have turned up enough electoral fraud to earn some
prominent Republicans some serious hard time behind bars. They cut their losses
and ran (probably a very wise move on their part).

With popular former Governor Mark Warner looking very good to pick up another
Senate seat for us, plus Jim Webb's popularity, plus a Democratic Governor,
Virginia could easily go our way this year.
