McCain planning to be in Senate next year?

That is what he suggested at a town hall meeting earlier this week in New Mexico by way of offering a tip of the cap to Rep. Steve Pearce, who is running to succeed Sen. Pete Domenici.

Via a very attuned Dem:

McCain: "Could I mention the presence of my friend, Congressman Steve Pearce, who I believe will be joining me in the United States Senate?

1. Fred Thompson had similar slip-ups because his heart wasn't in it.

I remember he was on a radio show, and one of the people there joked, "The next president is waiting."

Thompson replied "So am I."

I think we're seeing a repeat of Thompson's campaign here, centered on a guy who really just doesn't want to run, but was pushed into it.

2. Well McCain is up for reelection in 2010

My bet is after he loses this race, late next year he will come out and say he won't run for reelection in 2010. He would be 74 by then.
