My Army husband's one comment about Obama in Iraq "Look how happy everyone is to see him"
Those happy faces - Soldiers for Obama - are the reason I'm working like crazy to get every Democrat into office that I possibly can. My husband took an informal survey in his unit and the majority of them are for Obama 'Hmmm - more of the same or a CiC with a brain?'

Just thought I'd share another POV of Obama's trip to Iraq.

Obama's obvious popularity with the troops must feel like a punch in the face to the Malkins and Kristols of the world. :-)

41. Nope.... thanks to Wes Clark, they can listen to Ed Schultz
http://securingamerica.com/node/485

That was the petition - but Raw Story carried the article regarding the fact that Clark's petition (and Congressional support) worked.

4. I wonder if the military is screening the people who are allowed to be
present when Barack is there? I remember reading how they did that when Shrub went to Iraq...everybody had to be a strong supporter or they were banned from being anywhere near Shrub!

6. Do they usually screen people to appear with visiting senators?

I'd guess at most they have a sign-up sheet so they get people who are at least interested.

9. I did 10 years in the military, under Reagan, Bush I, and Clinton.
I never experienced any kind of screening for visits by dignitaries. If they did it for Shrub, it was a first. We were just expected to be on our best behavior, no matter who it was visiting.

Edited on Mon Jul-21-08 11:54 PM by CitizenLeft
...there was a report today (heck, I think I read it today) that Rice sent down a directive that no presidential candidates are to get special treatment - if they need to rent a bus, then give them info on where to rent a bus and no more. I don't think the military would allow screening to benefit him. Now, they might for McCain. That's another story, since no such directive came down when he was in Iraq.

38. I read the same thing about the Rice directive. What a sick group of
people this admin has. I understand one side not wanting to help the other to win, but instructing State Dept. affiliates to back away is a bit beyond the pale! I'm sure Barack has people traveling with him that can easily handle what ever he needs so it won't matter much, but this is kindergatden BS by the Shrub admin. Shame on them.

Edited on Mon Jul-21-08 10:58 PM by peacebaby3
though they didn't use that exact term.

The REALLY BIG DEAL is because of the security around his visit some soldiers trying to get to dinner and back to the safe area/camp were stuck outside after dark which made it even more dangerous. There were some pissed off soldiers. That's how much Dubya supports the troops.

19. And they should be!! Bush McCain are horrible for the troops.
They don't armor them properly, they have lied to the troops about their commitments to them, they have opposed needed benefits, they have actively sought to limit current war vets from getting proper medical attention.

Why does the GOP hate the troops?!

In 04, a lot of the voter abroad was deliberately fooled with. Let's hope the methods are fair.

22. Thanks for the reminder, I need to research how they'll vote, in 2004
they voted on a computer - I think it was just a PC - and it made me very uncomfortable. Maybe it's time for us to get the word out for them to send in requests for absentee ballots.

43. My Army National Guard hubby made an interesting observation.
He pointed out that only the black soldiers seemed to be getting their photos taken with Obama, while the whites stood behind him in formation -- meaning the white (mostly male) soldiers didn't have a choice in being there, whereas the blacks seemed genuinely happy to see him.

I don't mean this as a concern troll post. I just think we (the Democrats in general) have a ways to go to win over the white male vote.

But my husband is a white male and he's voting for Obama; he's one of the smart ones, lol.

44. The black community is experiencing a wave of excitement about history
being made, they're also looking at someone who is being a role model in their lives like they haven't seen before. That might explain their lack of military protocol. My husband's not black either ;-)

45. Ah, I didn't mean that as a lack of military protocol ...
What I was trying to say was that the black soldiers overall seemed thrilled to see Obama while most of the whites were merely polite, which made me wonder how much support he will get from that base. It's hard to get an accurate reading from just a handful of photos, though. Fortunately, we get enough support from women, blacks, Latinos and young people to make up for the white male and senior citizen vote that the Repugs seem to snag every four years.

Good to hear Obama's got a lot of support from your husband's unit. :)
