CNN: McCain camp admit that rumors of potential VP pick help distract attention from Obama's trip

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/07/22/mccain-camp-talk-of-a-vp-announcement-this-week/#more-9364

<snip>

The prospect of a McCain vice presidential announcement this week, first reported by Bob Novak on the Human Events Web site, would obviously change the subject from Barack Obama’s trip to the Middle East and Europe.

In fact, even some of McCain’s own advisers admit that just leaking the possibility of a VP selection could take some of the attention away from Obama — which could, in fact, be what the campaign is trying to do.

A senior adviser said the report is a “head fake” meant to help distract attention from Barack Obama’s headline-grabbing overseas trip.

But when pressed, this adviser said that was their public explanation because they did not want to give the impression the campaign was undisciplined: “Because someone is an idiot, so we have to explain it as a tactic.”

2. and how many news anchors are following McSame around?
First McSame dares Obama to go over there. So he does and kicks his ass on the trip.

Now McSame wants to headfake us about a VP. Please let us know your pic so that we can begin to tear them down a month ahead of the convention (then no one will watch the stupid thing- and thus no bump)

8. Even so, this is what people will see on the evening news:
McCain introducing a boring Republican in front of a small crowd of white people who will applaud politely.

Obama telling the Europeans what work they will have to do in front of cheering thousands with people hanging off off utility poles to get a look at him.

7. I never bought it because it would be dumb to announce his VP this week.
He shouldn't pick before Obama, though I hope he does.

9. Interesting. Looks like the McCain campaign is fearing a shake-up
But when pressed, this adviser said that was their public explanation because they did not want to give the impression the campaign was undisciplined: “Because someone is an idiot, so we have to explain it as a tactic.”

They're paranoid that the McCain campaign looks "undisciplined" and this adviser sounds a bit stressed about it. The ultimate irony is that they look undisciplined by explaining the strategy of their leak. The smarter choice would have been to leak it and then shut the hell up.

11. Hmm, so now the news about the news
Or are we really supposed to be in awe over the McCain campaign doing a "head fake?" Heck just call up Andrea Mitchell and tell her anything, she's great for getting garbage like that out on the air.

12. lying to the media is not a head fake

Going to LA and getting them to guess that is what your doing is a head fake.

If they are going to actually lie to the reporters and make them look stupid they will reap a huge animus - even Novak doesn't like to be played.
