Vanity Fair counters with mock cover of John and Cindy McCain

Vanity Fair Covers The New Yorker
by Vanity Fair
July 22, 2008, 12:10 PM

Cover-McCain2.jpgWe here at Vanity Fair maintain a kind of affectionate rivalry with our downstairs neighbors at The New Yorker. We play softball every year, compete for some of the same stories, and share an elevator bank. (You can tell the ones who are headed to the 20th floor by their Brooklyn pallor and dog-eared paperbacks.)

And heaven knows we’ve published our share of scandalous images, on the cover and otherwise. So we’ve been watching the kerfuffle over last week’s New Yorker cover with a mixture of empathy and better-you-than-us relief.

We had our own presidential campaign cover in the works, which explored a different facet of the Politics of Fear, but we shelved it when The New Yorker’s became the “It Girl” of the blogosphere. Now, however, in a selfless act of solidarity with our downstairs neighbors here at the Condé Nast building, we’d like to share it with you. Confidentially, of course.

13. The drugs are craddled in her hands.
Instead of prison garb she is dressed as any wealthy heiress would dress informally at home. I think the cover is fair enough, not quite as over the top as the New Yorker, but good enough. Oh, and the funny part about it, sort of the reverse of the reverse of the original, is that there is nothing much inaccurate in the depiction.

16. Cindy's drugs are spilling outta
her hand and that pic of w on the wall is priceless.

The burning of the Constitution in the fireplace says it all..and who cares if it's all true. At least it's out there.

18. That is the play.
Where everything in the New Yorker cover was by intention an item from the absurd rightwing misrepresentations against the Obamas, just about everything in the Vanity Fair cover can be substantiated. (McCain doesn't need a walker that we know of, but his physical and mental status due to aging are valid concerns.)

20. the problem is, everything in here is true, just maybe slightly exaggerated, the Obama
New Yorker cover was a satire on the RW perception of the Obamas. Not analagous.

and their attire is in no way satirical - a white robe for him perhaps and her as the red queen or Marie Antoinette -

not unfunny but not as hard hitting as it should be.

it still shows elements of the truth...Cindy has handfulls of pills and John is leaning on his walker...the other showed the lie of the Obamas...Barrack in a turban, Michelle with an AK 47 (r whatever)...totally different still
