Clinton supporters lend Obama a big fundraising hand
LAT: Clinton supporters lend Obama a big fundraising hand
Her former donors step up in June to chip in over a million dollars to his campaign. His backers have barely made a dent in her $25-million debt.
By Dan Morain and Kate Linthicum, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
July 22, 2008

Apparently heeding Hillary Rodham Clinton's plea to heal the rift in the Democratic Party, her donors gave as much as $1.6 million to Barack Obama's presidential campaign last month, campaign finance reports show.

Obama's donors, however, were not quite as quick to send money Clinton's way....

On Monday, an Obama campaign aide said that at least 400 of Obama's donors had given to Clinton. But most gave after the June 30 filing deadline, meaning the donors won't become public until August....

***

At least 300 Clinton donors gave Obama the maximum $2,300 that an individual can contribute to a candidate for the primary. Several gave an additional $2,300 for the general election. Altogether, high-end Clinton donors accounted for $802,000 to Obama.

Clinton collected maximum $2,300 donations from 11 Obama donors, totaling $25,300.

Many Clinton donors said they were sending money to Obama simply because they wanted to see a Democrat win the White House....

1. and it was supposed to work...how??
Obama 'somehow' raised $52 mill last month...when many were ready to say $30 mill would have been a 'poor showing'...

HRC has plenty of time to raise the $$$...we have a white house to win...

4. Actually, our sources indicate all of Hillary's debt has been erased,
including the personal 13 million dollar loan to her campaign. I am proud to say I helped as did millions of others, because we love her; and, to preclude any more gripes about Obama's supporters having to give her a nickel. If our info is correct, halleluah; her debt cannot be held against her anymore. Some fundraising, considering she suspended her campaign and had to maintain a distance for decorum's sake.

Maybe this has been mentioned somewhere; but, I haven't seen it. Of course, some of these figures cannot be verified until reporting in August.

13. I saw the same thing on some PUMA forums
It would be great news if true, but as for now I'm taking it with a grain of salt. As soon as my next paycheck comes in, I'll toss a little bit of it her way.

10. This is a bit disingenuous. The references given relate to $2300 donors
only, and we already knew that Obama's financial base are folks donating an average of $65-80 (isn't that about right?). Of course comparing donors of $2300 are going to give the impression that Hillary's "supporters" are stepping up and Obama's aren't. Compare everyone down to the $50 level and I'd bet we would see better numbers (probably not a huge amount of difference in $$'s, but certainly in numbers of donors)

12. "average donation" doesn't mean much here
Obama certainly has thousands and thousands of maxed-out donors.

14. only "as much as 1.6 million"?
Thats pennies in the scheme of this years campaign.

Why are neither of them helping Kucinich retire his debt? That is the bigger issue.

15. Huff Post has her loaning herself another $1 million after the race was over & debt growing.
Clinton Loaned Self Another $1 Million After Leaving Race
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/07/20/clinton_loaned_self_another_1.html

June 20, 2008
By Matthew Mosk

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's debt to her vendors grew in June, according to a federal filing tonight to the Federal Election Commission, and the New York Democrat reported loaning herself an additional $1 million after leaving the campaign trail.

Clinton raised just $2.7 million in June and finished the month with $25.2 million in campaign debt, most of that, $13.175 million, owed to Clinton herself, according to her report to the FEC. She has said she will seek to repay the campaign's debts to others before paying herself back. Campaign vendors awaiting payment included the firm of strategist Mark Penn, owed $5.3 million, and the Dewey Square Group, owed $236,000.

The campaign also owed local firms in states such as Pennsylvania and Indiana, where Clinton fought in late, competitive primaries. She owed nearly $1,800 to Kokomo Center Schools in Indiana, for instance, and nearly $6,000 to Dakota Pizza in Wynnwood, Pa.

Hillraisers Donated Less Than $20,000 To Obama In June

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/21/hillraisers-donated-less_n_114100.html

July 21, 2008

By now, most political junkies know that Barack Obama raised a lot of money in June.

But his campaign's $52 million dollar take for the month becomes all the more impressive when considering the utter lack of help he received from Hillary Clinton's high-dollar fundraising machine. When comparing Obama's full FEC filing for June with a list of 311 "Hillraisers" -- or supporters who bundled more than $100,000 in contributions for Sen. Clinton -- the Huffington Post found only eight names in common between the two lists. Not all of those donors maxed out, either, making for a relatively paltry figure of $19,250 in direct, hard-money contributions from Hillraisers for the month.

*****

But still, the fact that fewer than three percent of Clinton's donors have donated any money directly to Obama in his first month as presumptive nominee is likely to raise the eyebrows of some leaders in the Democratic Party who are hoping to see signs of unity. Clinton suspended her campaign in early June, and officially endorsed Barack Obama in a speech on June 7.

LATE UPDATE: The Washington Post's The Trail blog offers another dimension to the picture. Scouring the latest FEC reports, they discovered a total of 2,200 individual Clinton donors -- as distinct from the smaller group of elite Hillraisers we tracked -- who became first-time Obama donors in June, and who donated $1.8 million of the $52 million total (or approximately four percent of the campaign's June take).

As we reported, Clinton and Obama sources described to the Post the fact that some bundlers may help fundraise without writing checks themselves. However, during our own review, it was clear that many more Hillraisers also wrote personal checks to Clinton, in addition to their bundling, than have currently done the same for Obama.

18. Hillraisers are just sore from losing.
For them, a loss means much more than for the average Hillary supporter. For them it means no private functions with President Hillary, no fund raising dinners, no phone calls, etc.
