19. NBC campaign coverage has all been outrageously biased

in McCain's favor. Every night they run a report on Obama which consists of McCain's attacks on Obama, the same ones night after night. Then they run a report on John McCain by Kelly O'Donnell, who gives the McCain talking points for the day along with warm fuzzy pictures of McCain speaking at places like picnics. Then the McCain attacks on Obama run during the Obama segment are repeated, but with McCain saying them. The McCain report must receive as much time as the Obama report, even when there is big news about Obama, like this week with his trip. Obama is not entitled to equal time with the McCain reports though.

It only gets worse.

They even run every McCain campaign commercial without context, evaluation or response. They just say "John McCain has a new ad out" and run the sucker. I watch every night and haven't seen a single ad for Obama.

Last Saturday Night NBC ran what is best described as an infomercial for nuclear power without having the decency to disclose that NBC's parent company, General Electric is in the business of building and supplying nuclear power plants, as well as making the nuclear fuel itself. At the end of the infomercial, NBC praised McCain for his plans to build 45 new nuclear power plants.

NBC spent a month on the Reverend Wright guilt by association smear and a week going after Wesley Clark for remarks he never even said. When Phil Gramm called Americans "whiners" NBC went half way through the story giving favorable context before airing the actual Gramm quote. Then, NBC had its analyst come on and announce that statements that aren't made by the candidates themselves don't matter. That was the end of the Phil Gramm incident.

NBC spent last Friday night covering McCain complaints that the volume of coverage Obama's trip would get was unfair to McCain. In fact, Obama has received very little coverage. NBC is in Iraq and Afghanistan, but they've spent nearly all their time running reports about how "sensational things in Iraq are now that the surge(which Obama opposed)fixed everything" They spent two nights interviewing Bush's surrogate General Patraeus about this, with the first night dedicated to Patraeus saying that Obama's plans for Iraq are very dangerous. Maliki's statement that the surge isn't the cause of lower rates of violence in Iraq wasn't covered. The surge propaganda is given as fact, not opinion. The coverage comes from the perspective of an assumption that generals must have the last word on decisions which have always been policy set by civilians. Questioning generals (just the ones that agree with Bush and McCain) is treated as blasphemy.


Obama's joyous reception from our troops in Kuwait was only treated with a glimpse. NBC did find time find time to attack the New York Times for not running a McCain press release, more time than was spent on Obama's reception in Kuwait.

Blockbuster News about Maliki supporting Obama's timetable plan was barely mentioned. General Mullen's advocacy of bringing some troops out of Iraq and and sending more to Afghanistan, which supports Obama's position, hasn't been aired. McCain flip flop to Obama's position on Afghanistan hasn't been reported. NBC did not report the White House's involvement in the cover up of Iraq's efforts to politely evict us.

This is all just a part of it. The wingnuts are now ganging up on NBC and the rest of the media for an alleged bias in favor of Obama. While NBC has totally ignored complaints from Obama supporters, GOP complaints got immediate responses. According to NBC, Obama is a new candidate so he gets more coverage. So far, coverage means scrutiny. NBC announced that this election is a referendum on Obama so McCain has been designated as the default candidate and needs no coverage. In other words, they not only have failed to scrutinize McCain, they've already decided they aren't going to scrutinize him at all during the entire election. Obama can only win if he overcomes an entire election worth of smear jobs.

The wingnuts are ganging up on the media now. I wish the left would do the same.

Obama's trip hasn't so much been covered as the media's coverage, and the media's CW about the Obama trip has been covered.

Obama may get more coverage, but MSNBC spends the majority of their Obama coverage interviewing McCain surrogates for their interpretation of the Obama news.

McCain's huge gaffes are papered over or made a one day story. Obama doesn't even have to make a gaffe, only someone with the most facile connection, and it becomes a week long circus.
