David Gregory: NBC's Lame-Duck?
Another bite the dust! Slot is opening for Rachael. Let at least hope.

Interesting article.

Snip//

On the morning of Sunday, July 20, NBC News paterfamilias Tom Brokaw was wrapping up Meet the Press, where he has been anchor since the sudden and untimely death of Tim Russert.

The weekly round table had ended, and it was time to say goodbye to his guests, NBC political director Chuck Todd and NBC White House correspondent David Gregory.

When the segment ended, both reporters sat with their hands neatly folded in front of them and awaited the frugally dispensed approval of Mr. Brokaw.

“Thank you very much, David Gregory, our NBC White House correspondent and, of course, star of MSNBC’s The Road to the White House,” said Mr. Brokaw.

Mr. Gregory managed not to grimace. His show is called Race for the White House.

“Chuck Todd, our political director,” continued Mr. Brokaw. “We’ll be seeing a lot more of you, here, on Meet the Press … in the weeks to come,” Mr. Brokaw said, it seemed, to Mr. Todd.

Mr. Gregory kept smiling as the credits rolled. But if deep inside his mind there was a momentarily flicker of career anxiety, the ambitious newsman could be forgiven. Since Russert’s death, speculation about the future anchor of Meet the Press has tended to favor the 36-year-old Mr. Todd and Mr. Gregory, 37. And it was Mr. Todd who got the public invitation to return.

Of course, it’s not Mr. Brokaw’s decision. But the slip was a reminder that nobody in Washington seems to be paying attention to Mr. Gregory’s new show.

Created when the network liquidated Tucker Carlson’s evening program, Mr. Gregory’s show was a fitting placement for the man who is arguably the most famous current White House correspondent. Over the past seven years, Mr. Gregory has become master of the dark art of theatrical confrontation, and the perfect whip-smart, self-important foil to Mr. Bush’s aw-shucks anti-elitism. For a long time, when the president was hot, so too was “Stretch.”

Along the way, he racked up more face time on the evening news than any other reporter in broadcast journalism. His blustery dust-ups with Mr. Bush and a succession of White House press secretaries became YouTube classics, heroic to those on the left, more proof of liberal bias to those on the right.

“He was that guy for the Bush administration,” said Mark Leibovich, a Washington-based reporter at The New York Times. “In a sense, he was the perfect Bush foil. Everything you hear about how George Bush felt alienated at Andover and Yale, and how he felt aggressively anti-elitist towards the people he thought were full of themselves, well, David Gregory would certainly fit that mold.”

But lame-duck presidents create lame-duck White House correspondents. And so identifying the silver-haired heartthrob with the big political story of the day was a blessing from the network.

From the moment the show kicked off on March 17, things looked grim. The format was essentially a high-tech version of, say, The McLaughlin Group, with various journalists sitting around debating topics of Mr. Gregory’s choosing.

//

Snip//
Halfway through his stint at the 6 p.m. hour on MSNBC, Mr. Gregory’s numbers are solid but not remarkable. For the second quarter of 2008 (from late March to late June), Race for the White House averaged roughly 526,000 total viewers and 161,000 in the 25-54 demographic—roughly twice the audience that Tucker Carlson averaged during the second quarter of 2007.

Twice Tucker is a form of damnation by faint praise.

And numbers for Race for the White House have been relatively flat from month to month, suggesting that Mr. Gregory has already attracted the audience that will recognize and follow his name. Now it’s a question of what his show can do. And while his colleagues at MSNBC have been stirring up controversy and grabbing attention from viewers inside the Beltway at every turn, Mr. Gregory has yet to make much noise.

2. You don't like the format?
I really like it, it gives the guests time for more than a quick sound bite. I like that they are on for the whole hour. I also like when the guests give their headlines in the beginning. Most have put thought into what they are going to say IMO and don't just wing it when asked a question.

7. I like it as well.
I usually only catch the last half hour but that's still more information than you get from most shows.

It's refreshing to hear POV's from both sides of the aisle and Gregory's show provides that opportunity.

Edited for snarky content. But does anyone agree that he looks much older? Maybe it's just me.

4. I fell out of love with him when he danced with the devil in the pale moonlight.
The devil in this case being "MC rove." He lost all credibility with me at that point, and it started to look as though he began to pull his punches a little after that. Like a spell had been cast and he decided to play ball a little more. I dunno. Probably just my imagination. But after that it just seemed as though he wasn't going for the jugular so much anymore. Deeply disappointing. And he takes his "devil's advocate" position a little too seriously on the show. I liked it when he was more adversarial, and it started to feel as though he'd softened up.

Just means there'll be an opening for a superior talent: Rachel Maddow! She's being groomed over there like nobody's business!

10. I think that they're being sarcastic.
I made a thread about this article in the morning, and that was the conclusion we reached at least.

Here's to hoping that it wasn't serious anyways.....

12. Did David Gregory's show replace Tucker Carlson's? The last time i saw him
was at the wh correspondents dinner on cspan, i used to think he was ok but after seeing him there it became apparent that he like so many of his kind live in a bubble and really want everybody to like them no matter how many war crimes they commit.

13. It's a horrible format for him...
He doesn't have the presence to corral so many people at once.

He would be better suited by the Meet the Press format, though I'm certainly not advocating for him to get that position.

14. If david gregory only had a clue
the way to make some waves would be to deal in facts and not snarky controversary for it's own sake.

His little "whip smart and dark art" ain't goin' over too well.

22. i KNOW!
He was so good. Every time he opened his mouth in the WH press room, that was practically a guarantee that the person at the podium was going to start to squirm. Then in one dance with Karl Rove, Karl wove his mystical spell around him....

on MSNBC. Hands down. I can hardly type his name with throwing up.

Rachel would be a HUGE HUGE improve over either of them.

24. He's a regular Today show sub
somehow I doubt his career is as much in peril as this article claims. True he may well lose his gig on MSNBC but they wouldn't be letting him host the Today show if someone inside the network didn't like him very much.

Edited on Wed Jul-23-08 07:58 PM by mloutre
He's so far out of his element in that role it's pathetic. They need to put the wicked-smaht Dr. Maddow into that slot and let "Stretch" go back to busting both Shrub's & his Spokesperson Barbie's petite pellitos during daytime press conferences again instead.
