4. I did call myself an asshole first. Made it an option, @ least.
Just felt like a poll that needed to be taken.

At least none so far are calling me a troll.

6. So, you're seriously afraid of Obama?
OK. After the past 8 years of George W. Bush, I can understand people being seriously afraid. I can understand people being cynical. Very cynical. It's been, lights on but nobody's home for too long now. So I can understand a political attitude of cynical paranoia -- a lethal combo.

But why project that on Obama? Surely, a state of cynical paranoia can't be absolute, for you? What do you make of Thomas Paine, and Mary Wollstonecraft?

I don't understand what you mean by "reconciliation". Nobody can seriously contend that McCain is a reasonable option, can they?

You see "Obama president of the world" and "him being all but worshipped" and it scares you. But I think you don't understand what's going on. He is saying that he's not going to be like Bush, and people are going crazy with joy at the thought, and when he speechifies there's a total connection because nothing he says could come from George W. Bush's mouth, or McCain's. If George W. Bush and John McCain and the US Republican party weren't such total assholes, and didn't stand for such incredible pain inflicted on the planet, people world over wouldn't be nearly so exuberant in joy at thought of their annihilation this US election season.

14. What would people say and think if..
Obama DIDN'T make the trip he did this week?

If he DIDN'T blow people away with his speeches (which I believe are substantive)?

If he DIDN'T draw the crowds that he does?

People keep talking about how Obama is getting all the attention in the news. Well, he is the news right now. The media outlets are treating this as if it's their duty to give equal air time to both candidates which is obviously self-serving, the more they can do to create their own issues, the more money they make (?). Whatever, as far as I'm concerned, McCain hasn't had a newsworthy moment in quite a while now...

Right now, and for the next 3+ months, the choices Obama and his campaign make are going to be damned either way and they know that. They are going to do what they think needs to be done to win the WH, and if the world seems to enjoy his company and people like taking his picture, so be it :)

I'm all for criticizing our candidate when he makes a bonehead move (see: FISA), but I like to look at the bigger picture and hope that all of the things he's doing are leading up to what will be a great Presidency that will have a positive legacy that reaches far into the future.

BTW, my vote was "Seriously, asshole, he gets it and he'll be a great president.", but I'm not quite sure about the asshole part

I thought he's great and since I like you SI, I won't call you "teh troll".

He's a great orator, he has some great views and ideas and I think this is the chance where our society that allows a government to do things to it, to a nation that watches every move the government makes.

I like the fact that we take responsibility which is what we haven't done in decades.

11. He has the makings of being a great President.
I personally preferred Hillary in the primaries...several reasons, most especially that I thought she was better on GLBT issues.

But I've come around completely. I am solidly behind Barack Obama as our nominee. And I see the traits, the character...that the Obama supporters saw. I see a man who is dazzlingly smart, I see a man who has a good character...I see a man who seems to have a good set of values. Who genuinely cares and loves this country and wants it to be a better place. I see a man who does, indeed, have the makings...the potential...of possibly being a great President.

17. He's a decent politician
Edited on Fri Jul-25-08 08:55 AM by bigwillq
with a great gimmick and message, and a terrific staff that has run a great campaign, that has allowed him to reach new, young and and first-time voters, which is always great for the party. He seems to want to reach out to all people, which bothered me at first with the religious groups, but I think that strategy could prove to be an effective one.

I think he has the makings to be a great politician, and world leader. We shall see how he does when he is elected. I want to see some action rather than words and speeches, and I think Obama could achieve it.
