TPM : McCain timeline of quotes on Iraq, He supported Bush since '03

Greg Sargent's article provides McCain's quotes on the Iraq war from the beginning of the war to just before the campaign. McCain obviously supported Bush's Iraq war strategy with numerous quotes of him stating that we need to stay the course. The only disagreement was that he thought we needed additional troops. When the additional troops were supplied, he approved of it. He then started hedging his bets by saying that we actually needed even more troops after the troop increase was announced. That way if the "surge" failed, he'd still be covered.

One quote that caught my attention contradicts one of McCain's main talking points:

Secretary Rumsfeld said, 'Well, our commanders on the ground haven't asked for them.' It's not up to the commanders on the ground. It's up to the leadership of the country to make these decisions. That's why we elect them and have civilian supremacy. We're now facing a terrible insurgency. We can prevail, but we've got to have more people over there to get the job done."

Now what was that stupid attack he's using against Obama?

"Senator Obama still wants to set a date for withdrawal, and he still, regardless of conditions on the ground, which the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs has said is very dangerous."

So his message is that listening to the generals is good if they agree with you but bad if they don't agree with you. Is that right McSame?
