McCain Surrogate - John Bolton Attack's Obama's "Radical" Berlin Speech
Edited on Sat Jul-26-08 12:28 PM by Median Democrat
The LA Times has been publishing a series of repetitious attacks on Obama by John McCain surrogate, and former ambassador to the UN, John Bolton who has most recently attacked Obama's speech as both radical and naive. Oddly, despite his former role as ambassador to the UN, Bolton heavily criticizes Obama's willingness to rely on institutions such as the UN. Perhaps Bolton is angling for a position in a McCain administration:

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-bolton26-2008jul26,0,4923423.story

"The successes Obama refers to in his speech -- the defeat of Nazism, the Berlin airlift and the collapse of communism -- were all gained by strong alliances defeating determined opponents of freedom, not by "one-worldism." Although the senator was trying to distinguish himself from perceptions of Bush administration policy within the Atlantic Alliance, he was in fact sketching out a post-alliance policy, perhaps one that would unfold in global organizations such as the United Nations. This is far-reaching indeed."

7. "strong alliances defeating determined opponents of freedom"
I'm not sure what Bolton is getting at. In World War II, the alliance against Nazism to which Bolton refers involved our support of people like Mao Zedong's guerrilla fighters in China, the Soviet Union, Josip Broz Tito's partisans in the former Yugoslavia, and the many communist party members throughout occupied Europe who were fighting in the resistance movements. After that, we actually helped former Nazis and "opponents of freedom" escape to South America and we allied ourselves with scores of fascist dictators throughout South America and the rest of the world like Iran and we even helped the international militant Islamic movement grow because they fought the Soviets in Afghanistan. And we know how the mujahedeen that came from throughout the Arab world to fight in Afghanistan that Reagan equipped and supported have turned out.

Maybe if we worked with international institutions and had a long-term and consistent global world view to preserve human rights wherever they are threatened, we could avoid these shifting alliances, supporting anti-democratic movements only to oppose them later by allying ourselves with other anti-democratic movements, all for the sake of the furtherance of immediate American interests.

9. Sounds like John Birch society scare tactics
about UN world government conspiracy theories. I didn't think anyone could tarnish the name "Bolton" more than that no-talent assclown Michael but John has managed it.
