The New McCain Attack Strategy: "Obama Works Out A Lot, Plays Basketball."
Edited on Sat Jul-26-08 06:46 PM by VolcanoJen
There's a pattern here, ever since Obama embarked on his trip abroad. McCain's team had nothing on Obama so they suddenly started to go after his basketball playing and exercise regimen. It's in CPT Porter's fictional account about Obama in Afghanistan, and it's appearing all over the wingnut blogs, with frequent references to the fancy hotel workout rooms.

It certainly makes a big appearance in the new McCain attack ad... and in an unintentionally hysterical twist, they attack Obama for "not visiting the troops" while showing video of Obama visiting the troops. Of course, it's video of the now iconic 3-point shot in Kuwait.

Man, that initial photo op that kicked off Obama's trip must have really fried the McCain camp's cookie. They're in a tizzy. And they're gonna go after Obama for his fitness and athletic prowess. Oooh! Scary. Am I missing something here?

This is going to be a very weird election, I'm thinking.

1. Showing your opponents youth and vigor
when you are a 72 year old man with known health problems is probably not the best strategy.

10. Maybe McCain can show his vigor by sitting around a table and playing cards
and getting up to piss and fart a lot.

2. Yes, it's OK to pump up Chimpy's obsessive bike-riding, 'cause that's just
healthy red-blooded American guyness. When Obama plays sports, it's either a vanity thing, an elitist thing, or worse, a BLACK thing. It's taking a positive for Obama--being a healthy, athletic young man--and turning it into a negative. And it's also to take the focus off the shuffling, drooling old shitbag's lack of vigor.

4. Yeah, but it just seems dumb, doesn't it?
I don't get it. I really don't. And I'm usually pretty good at figuring out stupid Republican crap.

Attacking Obama using his workout regimen seems to be completely orchestrated across backchannels (including, I'm sure, RW radio), yet it seems so politically inept. McCain has the bitter Pringles-eaters living-in-mom's-basement We Were Never Popular vote already sewn up, doesn't he? (Cough) Jonah Goldberg (Cough)...

I'm really scratching my head on this one.

5. Yeah, well basketball...that's something BLACK people do....
Like LeBron James and Kobe.
And me.
Dumb ass white dude.

I went down to the basketball court local to where I live, and I threw a few up today.
Shit, I'm old and I can't jump and I can't dunk.
I'm 53... that's damn near dead in basketball parlance.

Everything hurts.
Feet.
Knees.
Ankles.
Back.

But like Barack, get me in a zone?
I'll hit three or four three pointers on your ass.
Did I mention I'm old?

I'll post up that treasonous monkey any day of the week.
I'd love to throw an elbow at his bike riding, pretzel choking ass.

6. Naw, it's just Obama is a Democrat
They made fun of Kerry's bike riding - though he has participated in 100 plus mile charity races - as he is doing nest week in a Pan-Mass ride for cancer research which he is doing again next week in honor of Kennedy. Now, Kerry is an excellent cyclists while Bush seemed to fall off a lot.

3. That's all they have left in the bag.
By November, McCain will be reduced to rolling around, face down on the floor, flailing away with feet and fists, like a kid pitching a fit.

8. Well Said

Jesus, this campaign of McLame's gets more ridiculous by the hour. The guy . . . plays BASKETBALL! And . . . STAYS IN SHAPE!!!

They can't even say that they're drawing a contrast between Obama as a layabout and McSame as some sort of dogged, indefatigable warrior (probably the original idea). Um, not so much resonance with THAT meme, methinks. Duh.

Thank goodness for these guys.

9. it's all they EVER have, aside from terra
well, maybe lowering taxes on the rich.

that isn't going to play this time, so the TERROR card will out, one way or another. if they can obliquely play it in terms of making people VERY afraid of the dangerously ill-suited, bad judgment-hampered, inexperienced BLACK Muslim candidate, that will be fine. if not, they WILL ratchet it up, as far as they see fit. they jumped right on it in 2001. why will things be any different? they are capable of ANYthing

you just watch

11. It's one of the basic tenets of "becoming the GOP Nominee"
You gotta sell you soul. You have to be willing to absolutely betray every principle you have ever held in your life, so that you will win.

But what cracks me up about this rather obvious "theme" is that it's just coming off as "he works OUT! he is an EXERCISING VIRILE FIT YOUNG MAN!" It seems as sort-of scary as prior evil Republican campaign years, but for some reason this year it's just worthy of ridicule and in dangerous "laughing stock" territory.

With whom will this tactic resonate? The bitter Jonah Goldbergs of the world? McCain already has them in the bag.

20. RW Thinks Soft and Pudgy Men Are Sexy
See Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh. However, RW do like their women slim, and insane. See Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin and Fox News female news casters. Susan Estrich just calls them all the "Anns." I refer to them as the GOP Thembots (bionic woman shout out).

None.

I want the Obama campaign to strike back hard. Also making a point how McCain has missed the most votes of any senator.

16. I have a feeling Obama's camp is holding their fire for maximum impact.
Much in the way they bucked the idea of Joint Town Halls so that they could save the shocking image of McCain and Obama side-by-side for the debates, when it will really count.

This wily Chicago crew knows McCain is trying to goad them into attacking "the war hero." They're too smart to take the bait... they'll go after McCain, and soon, but on their own terms, I predict.

21. Rec'd! And this quote from Obama shows mccain has been
"working the refs"..

.."I will make one comment and that is about this notion of unfair coverage. Sen. McCain spent an awful lot of the week not presenting his own agenda but working the refs and attacking me. If he puts forward a positive agenda, he might get more coverage. It's how you use your time."
