Bayh's stock is climbing like mad on the Dem VP markets.
He's up to 26 on Intrade now. What's the story?

Behind Bayh is Kaine at 15, Biden at 12, and Sebelius at 10. Everyone else is in single digits.

4. I don't want him as VP but I imagine his stock is climbing because
he's reportedly popular in his state. Polls have shown that Obama has a shot at Indiana. He might be helpful in neighboring Ohio. Heck if Obama can win Indiana and Virginia and the Kerry states he doesn't even need Ohio or Florida. And finally as a supporter of HRC in the primaries it might be a bone to her supporters to unite the party. That said I don't want him, but in the end Obama will pick who he thinks will help him win the election, and I'll accept whoever that person is. One big drawback about Bayh, however, is that the governor is a Republican and if an Obama/Bayh ticket were elected I presume he would fill the vacancy with a Republican.

Except for a few they don't remember he was a Governor here in Indiana.

17. Indiana Governor assumes office January 1st 2009
VP would not assume office until January 20th.

Current Governor would have to win re-election to replace open Senate seat with a Republican.

This would be as bad as Gore's choice of Liebermann.

9. Not even close ...
Bayh would be an exceptional pick ...

People need to start seeing the forest for the trees, so to speak, here ...

People WANT to compare it to Edwards, now Lieberman ...

Edwards was a first term senator with no other background (and I like him, that isn't a knock, just what it is) and Lieberman was a D senator in a state where being a D means you get elected ...

Bayh is a D in flat red state ...

He won his first state wide race as Secretary of State, then had two terms as a governor, and now is his third team as a senator, as a D in a republican state ...

Sorry, but you can't be a blue as blue left wing liberal and get elected as a township auditor in states like Indiana ...

I love DU, but this little slice of heaven is NOT "mainstream" ...

Bayh brings "executive experience" to the ticket, he has both foreign policy creds and economic creds with his senate committees, he has very little "ethic" hooks to get caught up on, he is not "partisan" ... And, for all the teeth nashing about him being DLC (and I have not love of the DLC), outside of being hawkish in the past, he is right on pretty much all the major party issues ...

FUNCTIONALLY, not ideology, but functionally, the Bayh pick is very much like Clinton picking Gore ... The traditional thought is that you need a VP to help you in other parts of the country ... Clinton picked another southerner to amplify his strengths there ... The Bayh pick amplifies BO's power zone around Illinois ... He WILL flip Indiana, he will be stronger than any McCain pick for Ohio, unless he picks someone from Ohio - who do you think people in Ohio are going to like more Romney or Bayh, the popular ex governor from the bordering state ... He helps with Michigan, helps to seal the deal in Iowa ... Won't hurt for those on the fence people in Pa ...

What people here just are not getting is this - the narrative the media is spinning for BO, people do see that, but they want to agitate it ... BO is BEST served with a VP who does NOT fit the "librul" typecast ...

I saw an inverview with Bayh and one of the MSM whores ... I, like most here, want to throw my remote through my TV when these pukes do their interviews with Ds where they just rake them through the coals and treat them like jerks ... That wasn't there with Bayh ...

10. Byah consistently supported Bush's positions and actions during
a time that we needed strong Democratic opposition. I have heard the DLC type positions and disagree with with most of them.

Obama is running as the candidate of change. Bayh represents the same limp Democratic positions that have helped put us into the political mess that we are now in. Bayh would be an exceptionally bad pick.

But, don't worry about my negative comments about Byah. The "mainstream" isn't reading DU anyway.

7. a few of Obama's inner circle are former Bayh-men, along with the DLC
so the ones who have Obama's ear have more influence. But "Obama-Bayh" just does not sound good.

I personally think Obama will win in spite of the veep choice.

8. I doubt he will pick a VP who supported the Iraq War.
He has repeatedly spoken about how much easier it will be to win this year if you can't be labeled a hypocrite on the war issue.

My guess is it's a governor or maybe a senator who opposed the war.

Surely he could do better than a DLC wet noodle like Bayh (and don't call me Shirley). Read an article yesterday about how the VP choice actually has a negligible effect on how that person's state votes -- in other words, Bayh won't deliver Indiana for Obama, just like Pawlenty won't deliver Minnesota for McAnus. http://www.startribune.com/politics/state/25920759.html?location_refer=$urlTrackSectionName

16. I Think It Will Be Bayh
Edited on Sun Jul-27-08 08:00 AM by salonghorn70
At least that is how I view it today. Tomorrow, who knows. For awhile I really thought it was going to be Biden. Then, the last week or so, I was convinced that it was going to be Kaine. Now, I think it will be Bayh.
I really like either of these three. Of course, I'm a little to the right of most of DU. I think that Kaine's problem is his lack of foreign policy experience. Either of these three will be great choices and will help the ticket if chosen.

Edited on Sun Jul-27-08 08:40 AM by Jake3463
Sending a Philadelphian politian out into the country to campaign for Obama is about the dumbest thing I ever heard. Rendell wins elections by turning out Philadelphia, Pittsburg, the Lehigh Valley and their subburbs. The T in PA does not vote for Rendell in primaries or GE in the state.

Rendell might help in Florida but he'd be a disaster in Ohio, the mountain states, and anywhere else in the country outside of states we are already winning.

Putting two products of two of the big city political machines on the ticket would be the dumbest idea ever. EVER.

PA will stay blue even if McCain puts Ridge on the ticket.

29. An Indiana contact tells me that Obama is strongly and actively
competing for Indiana this time, and says it is the first time in a very long time that staff and cash are being dedicated to competing against the Republicans.

He believes this is a competitive state for Obama, that Bayh could arguably boost Obama's totals, and that that combination could remove Mitch Daniels from office.

Bayh's early and high-profile support of Bush's Iraq invasion, it seems to me, would be a disqualifying factor for his being on Obama's shortlist, but politics can be odd sometimes.

33. Bayh As Veep? But He Co-Chaired Neocon Committee For The Liberation Of Iraq With McCain!
By Greg Sargent - July 16, 2008, 6:03PM

link:

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/07/bayh_as_veep_he_cochaired_wing.php

"Senator Evan Bayh's appearance today with Barack Obama at the "21st Century Threats" summit has stirred a lot of talk in the press about the possibility of him being on Obama's Veep short-list.

But we're not sure that's such a viable idea. That's because in 2003, Bayh was an honorary co-chair of the neocon pro-war Committee for the Liberation of Iraq -- a group he joined along with none other than John McCain and Joe Lieberman, according to a press release from during the run-up to the invasion.

Check this out, from the group's press release on February 14th, 2003 (via Nexis):

The Committee for the Liberation of Iraq (CLI) is pleased to welcome Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) as an Honorary Co-Chairman. Bayh becomes the third U.S. Senator to join the committee after Sens. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) announced their participation on January 28.

The Committee is a neo-con group that was formed to propagandize the country into war. It boasted such illustrious neocon members as Bill Kristol, former CIA director James Woolsey, and even McCain senior foreign policy adviser and Chalabi-bamboozler Randy Scheunemann, whom Josh has been blogging about.

Bayh would, to put it very charitably, muddle Obama's message. It's true that Bayh was said to have subsequently removed himself from the group. But Obama's campaign is partly about -- and rightly so -- the judgment he made, and others didn't, in the run-up to the invasion.

The McCain campaign and the Repubs would have a grand time mocking the choice. Indeed, the McCain camp is already trying to make an issue of Bayh's past.".
