Barack Obama's Euro-bounce: Nine up
Barack Obama's Euro-bounce: Nine up
This is the biggest advantage that Gallup has found for Obama since March.
Posted July 27, 2008 2:00 PM

The impact of Barack Obama's foreign trip on public opinion is measured in a poll which showed Obama and John McCain statistically tied earlier in the week.
The Swamp

by Mark Silva

The European bounce for Barack Obama has lifted the Democratic candidate for president to the greatest advantage he has held over Republican rival John McCain, according to the results today of the newest Gallup daily tracking poll.

It's Obama 49 percent, McCain 40 percent, in the average of three days of Gallup surveys run through Saturday. The nine point edge is the biggest that Gallup has found since it started tracking opinion about Obama versus McCain in March. It follows a tour that carried Obama from Afghanistan and Iraq to Israel, Germany, France and Great Britain, which drew widespread media coverage of the candidate.

"The margin, coincident with the extensive U.S. news coverage of Obama's foreign tour, is the largest for Obama over McCain measured since Gallup began tracking the general election horse race in March,'' Gallup's Frank Newport notes.

"A key question remains as to whether this 'bounce' is short-term (as happens to bounces in some instances following intense publicity surrounding a convention) or if his lead will persist,'' adds Newport, editor-in-chief of the Gallup Poll, in a report today on the poll. "The answer... will become evident in the next several days.''

3. I'm sorry... but who are these LOONS
who keep changing their damn opinion on who they're voting for every time something happens in the news??? Is it not clear that McSame is a horrible person for president and an extension of B*sh's fascist regime? It's great news, but I still don't understand how polls can swing SO much in a few days on minor situations happening, it really makes people look weak-minded.

4. This writer seems to think the media's manipulating the polls:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x373266

25/07/08 "ICH" -- - Barak Obama proved yesterday why November's presidential election will end in a 50-state sweep. John McCain has no chance. It's like George Bush climbing into the ring with Mike Tyson; one thundering left hook and the Crawford Caligula would be sprawled across the canvas in a pool of his own blood. "No mas"! The same fate awaits the crabby senator from Arizona. The polls are skewed to look like there's a political horse-race going on. There isn't. It's a complete rout. There's one well-toned thoroughbred striding from venue to venue electrifying the ever-increasing throngs, and one doddering, old mare limping towards the glue-factory. Someone should put a stop to it before McCain gets hurt.

Yesterday, at the Victory Column in Berlin's Tiergarten, Obama extracted Old Glory from the burn-pile and gave Brand America a desperately needed shot of adrenaline. 200,000 ecstatic Germans jammed the streets in what turned out to be the political shindig of the year. Many of them were waving American flags and chanting, "Obama, Obama, Obama". It was like Jack Kennedy had risen from his moldy sepulcher and made his way across the pond for one last rousing ovation. Obama has the very same affect on crowds. Its a gift and he knows how to use it to great advantage.

"People of Berlin, people of the world, this is our moment, this is our time," Obama boomed. "I know my country has not perfected itself, we've made our share of mistakes and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions. But the greatest danger of all is to allow new walls to divide us from one another."

What can we say about Obama's oratory skills that hasn't already been said? He is one of those unique characters who knows how to tap into the collective psyche and put them under his spell. He is the closest thing to a Pied Piper we've seen in the last half century. Whatever one thinks of his politics, his speeches are a welcome reprieve from the simian blabbering of President Dimwit.

snip//

McCain, on the other hand, is the perfect embodiment of his party; a rusty, broken-down hulk that's been stripped of its engine, its fenders and all its moving parts. Even the steering wheel is gone. It's a dead-loss; nothing is salvageable.

McCain is in way over his head. This election is going to be a real embarrassment for him. It's too bad. He should be back at the Phoenix Rest Home shooing kids off the front lawn instead of waiting for the ax to fall in November. It's a rotten way to end a career.

21. Good question
I refuse to believe there are 10-20% of this country that waffle so much between these two people. I could see this perhaps in a primary where the candidates generally share the same goals, but these two candidates we have now offer two vastly different visions of how to bring the country forward (or rather, not bring it forward.)

14. hang on, they've been saying all year dems do better in polls taken over the weekend
a bunch of pundits were trying to figure out why that was and implied it was because dems don't DO anything on the weekend. I remember screaming at my TV "its because dems are not HOME during the week because they are working!"

For what ever reason, its what they say.

And don't they say Kerry had a 16 point lead at this point? Or some other such nonsense. I just have to hope, send money, and work my hardest for my man.
