Obama to campaign in rural Missouri
By SAM HANANEL
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON | Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is coming back to Missouri this week to campaign in rural areas of the state.

It's part of his strategy to visit parts of the country that have received little attention from Democrats in past campaigns.

The daylong visit on Wednesday will include Springfield, Rolla and several other smaller cities and towns that are still being finalized.

"This is a microcosm of his strategy on a national basis," U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said Sunday on a conference call with reporters. McCaskill, who will join Obama for the trip, has been a key adviser in Obama's campaign and has pushed him to travel to areas that are not usually considered friendly Democratic territory.

"It's very important for people in traditional Republican strongholds to have a sense of how humble he is, how patriotic he is, that he is a good Christian man who understands Missouri," McCaskill said.

1. Good for him
Missouri is very close, so if Obama can cut down margins in the rural Republican areas and then increase AA and young voter turnout in Kansas City and St. Louis, then he will win the state.

3. It is brilliant..that's what I was thinking
when I read it. It's manyfold brilliant..it's gets news 'cause it's never been done and the people will get to see Obama up close and personal. Also tying in with Dean and Obama's 50 State Strategy.

5. Showtime in Springfield
Funny: John McCain is holding a private fundraiser in Springfield on Wednesday. It's going to a fascinating day in the Ozarks!

7. Funny or very strategic? It's fascinating that Obama's campaign
will be there the same time as McCain...who do you think will draw the bigger crowds?

This is brilliant....take the battle to McCain, take it to him toe to toe, this should continue to unnerve McCain.

I don't know about anyone else but I am enjoying this immensly...

just speculating but it would be a brilliant move to announce in Missouri and then go to VA

probably doesn't mean anything but its fun to speculate.

12. I thought he grew up on the KS side?
I could be wrong. I was at an event the other night and his mom was there. I thought they said she lived in KS.

But his high school is in MO. And he did go to Mizzou.

10. Springfield is hardly rural being the third largest city in the state.
I do feel he can make headway there since it is a big college town. Unfortunately, a lot of the colleges are BBC, CBC, and Evangel (all "Christian") but Southwest Missouri State is there as well and the biggest of all. I know I live in Texas now but Springfield is my home......

22. Springfield has MSU, though. And OTC. And Drury.
And Evangel is very moderate, in my opinion.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will hold a town hall meeting Wednesday in Springfield, according to this campaign.

The exact time and location will be announced Monday, said Debbie Mesloh, a spokeswoman for Obama's Missouri campaign.

In June, presumptive Republican nominee John McCain held a town hall meeting before a crowd of 350 packed into the auditorium in Plaster Student Union on the campus of Missouri State University.

Local Democratic officials expect Obama's campaign to chose a larger venue than McCain's, as he has a tendency to draw large crowds.

I wish my nephews would go see him. My family back there are republicans. I just spent a week there on Tablerock Lake and we had some spirited discussions. My brother said he thinks I convinced both of his sons to vote for Obama!

20. I did!
The water was up about 15' higher than last year (we had a family reunion on TR last June) and the boat launch was under water. Had to watch for lots of trees when we were out on the boat. We stayed at a house right on the water and I loved every minute of it! Hated to come home. I lived back there years ago and my heart is still in the Ozarks.
