For anyone getting the email from Cpt. Porter in Afghanistan, here's my response
Edited on Mon Jul-28-08 08:08 AM by Gman
I hit "Reply All" and sent this:

Subject: RE: From our friend who is serving in Afghanistan: Snopes status: False

From Snopes:

Status: False

------------------
And…
------------------

Now the Bagram captain is dialing back, having signed the viral e-mail with his name, rank and unit — a possible violation of military regulations barring political statements. This morning, he sent a new statement (punctuation corrected):

"I am writing this to ask that you delete my email and not forward it. After checking my sources, information that was put out in my email was wrong. This email was meant only for my family. Please respect my wishes and delete the email and if there are any blogs you have my email portrayed on I would ask if you would take it down too. Thanks for your understanding."

In addition to the official military denials, the following Department of Defense video shows Senator Obama meeting, talking, and eating breakfast with U.S. troops in Afghanistan (and includes a brief interview with a soldier who noted that Obama "took time out of his schedule to come over and visit with us, not just at this camp but at other surrounding camps in Afghanistan"):
-------------------

And from another officer that did see Obama…

“I don't know who this captain saw, but it wasn't the Barack Obama *I* just saw in Afghanistan. Unlike most of the pols who breeze on through for nothing more than brief photo ops before leaving he was warm, friendly & engaging (as much as security would allow) with the troops he met and he was genuinely interested in us and our mission and how we could best serve our country. When Obama went to Jordan a few days ago they said "The guy gets it. Sharp, aware and a very good listener. He doesn't seem stuck in preconceived positions." Those are the qualities *I*'d like to see in my Commander in Chief. While Obama was out visiting the troops, what was John McCain doing ...?, playing golf with his rich cronies (Bush Sr.) in Kennbunkport and whining about how much press coverage Obama was getting. Definitely *not* the qualities I want to see in my Commander in Chief.

Personally I think any officer who would publically gripe about not getting "thanked" for his service by a civilian is a disgrace to the military.”

The Truth About Larry’s “Soldier” Email
via The Mitch And Nan Show by mitchandnan on 7/25/08

El Primo Douche!

Last night during his “Rense” Interview, Larry made reference to an email “he had received” from a soldier about Obama “shunning” soldiers while on his trip to the Middle East. Larry seemed “proud” to be receiving such news from the “front lines” and while he didn’t say so, he indicated that soldier(s) were writing HIM to give them their impressions of Senator Obama.

What BULLSHIT!

Our friend Yankee Clipper found the following report….proving the accusations about the snub were NOT TRUE and further proving the “email” had not come to Sinclair at all!

Enjoy!

Larry Sinclair, the Internet’s most prolific peddler of rumors, lies, innuendo and half-truths about all things Obama or, any one who challenges Larry’s fairy tales, appeared on the Jeff Rense radio program last night for a little more self promotion. During his appearance Sinclair claimed he received e-mails from two G. I’s alleging Senator Obama had “shunned” the troops during his recent trip to the Mid east. Unfortunately for Rense and Sullivan, late yesterday the Army angrily refuted and debunked those claims.

Jeff Rense, a radio talk show host who the U.S. State Department identifies on its web site as a “conspiracy theorist,” as well as a source for “a great deal of unreliable information,” regularly plays host to Sinclair and his wild-eyed theories of sexual escapades, drug use, murder and thuggery by Senator Obama, his supporters and bloggers who dare to challenge Sinclair’s warped fantasies and hallucinations.

http://usinfo.state.gov/media/Archive/2005/Jul/27-595713.html

Sinclair’s latest allegations, posted on his blog, are contained in an e-mail that spread across the Internet and military blogs like wild fire in the last few days. The e-mail was apparently written by an intelligence officer from the Utah National Guard stationed at Bagram Airbase.

According to the officer’s e-mail, Senator Obama shunned soldiers while on his way to a recreational facility known as the Clamshell. The officer further asserts, “as the soldiers where lined up to shake his hand he blew them off,” preferring to “take his publicity pictures playing basketball.”

Furious Army officers refuted the intelligence officer’s claims. A spokeswoman for Bagram, Army Lt Colonel Rumi Nielson-Green stated, “these comments are inappropriate and factually incorrect.” She also pointed to military regulations prohibiting uniformed military personnel from making such political statements.

Today’s New York Daily News reports Lt Colonel Nielson-Green as saying, Obama ’didn’t play basketball at Bagram or visit the Clamshell. Further, home-state troops were invited to meet him, but his arrival was kept secret for security reasons.’

“We were a bit delayed … as he took time to shake hands, speak to troops and pose for photographs,” Nielson-Green said.

The Daily News further reports that ‘e-mails to the officer responsible for the charges and a call to his wife were not returned.’

Undoubtedly, there will be a new post placed on Sinclair’s blog alleging a conspiracy and cover up by the U.S. Army
