Obama leads in fund raising in 5-county Milwaukee metro area
3 of those counties traditionally support Republicans

Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties haven’t voted for a Democrat for president since Lyndon Johnson ran and won in 1964.

Election 2008

Laura Hardwick (left), 16, and her mother, Carol Hardwick, of Mequon, support presidential candidate Democrat Barack Obama.

In the last two presidential contests, the three counties favored George W. Bush by 2-to-1 margins.

Yet despite that history, Democrat Barack Obama is raising more money than John McCain in Waukesha and Ozaukee counties, and isn't far behind the Republican in Washington County, campaign finance reports show

"Nobody's seen this before," said Mequon resident Marc Marotta, a former top aide to Gov. Jim Doyle, who recalled how contributors were calling him to attend an Obama fund-raiser last year.

"It was the easiest money I've ever had to raise," Marotta said.

Whether the campaign cash translates into votes, of course, remains to be seen. Don Taylor, chairman of the Waukesha County Republican Party, said he didn't realize Obama had raised more money than McCain in his county, but said he isn't worried.

1. Whether giving money translates into votes?
Maybe I'm stupid, but giving hard-earned money to a candidate is the strongest indication of voting for a candidate.
