I don't prefer Nunn, but here's one reason why I think he might do it
If the Obama camp has reason to believe that Nunn helps nullify some disadvantages, he might be worth adding to the ticket, given that in 4 years Nunn could retire and Obama could pick his successor....

4. Not only is he too old, he's been out of the Senate for YEARS. Why him and not Biden?
Hell, Hagel would be better.

7. I've said that I would support whomever Obama chose, and I mean that--
I'm not one of those people who would refuse to vote or donate money because I didn't like his VP pick--even if it was (gulp) Hillary. But I just can't see him picking an old codger who might make a good advisor, but has been out of the political game for many years. I would be very surprised at that pick.

6. If he goes the 'old' route, I prefer Graham, but either one will retire in 4 years
So does it really matter in the end?

I do think that Obama wants to carry Georgia real bad, and that would be the main reason Nunn would be so attractive.

14. the point of this thread isn't the 10 thousand other things that aren't the swith in 4 years that
i mentioned, which is the point. My point is not to endorse Nunn, but to throw out a reason why an old ex-senator would be utilized now in that capacity.

18. You do know that Al Gore against gay rights when he was a Senator
Edited on Mon Jul-28-08 05:53 PM by Hippo_Tron
And then once he became Vice President he did pretty much a 180. When you represent a conservative state like Georgia, you pander to your constituents or you don't get elected. Once you're not representing that state anymore, chances are that you become far more progressive and attune to national trends.

LBJ was the same way with segregation. He was for it as a Texas Senator and then as President he signed the most important civil rights legislation in history. By your purity standards African Americans (or at least those that could vote) should have boycotted Kennedy/Johnson in 1960.

22. No, but he refused to take contributions form gay rights groups...
http://graphics.boston.com/news/politics/campaign2000/news/Bradley_rips_Gore_s_scare_tactics_to_win_gay_votes+.shtml

He called homosexuality "something that society should not affirm". He also went to a fund-raiser hosted by Fred Phelps. Phelps wasn't picketing soldiers' funerals back then but was hardly a beacon of tolerance.

Then, as I said, all of a sudden he became pro gay rights just as soon as he stopped representing Tennessee.
