The Ad That Will Ruin McCain's Week

OK, I'm just throwing this idea out there for free use by the Obama campaign.

On MSNBC today, I heard Tony Blankley speak some rare words of wisdom. He said that in hardball politics, "if you are explaining you are losing". So I don't think the Obama should use explanations to respond to McCain's offensive new ad:

Instead, they should turn the tables using mockery. Force McCain to explain himself.

Without further ado, here is my ad script:

FADE IN on unflattering picture of John McCain.

NARRATOR: John McCain is confused again.

Shot of John McCain speaking to a townhall meeting.

NARRATOR: First he claimed that he had a "perfect" record on veterans issues, even though he got a "D" from the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

A report card with a "D" rating circled in red.

NARRATOR: Then he denied endorsing Obama's Iraq plan, even though he told CNN it was a "pretty good timetable".

Newspaper clips of McCain saying "pretty good timetable".

NARRATOR: And now, McCain is claiming that Obama didn't visit the troops, even though Senator Obama visited our troops just a few days earlier.

Video clip of Senator Obama shooting 3-point shot with troops. The same clip McCain used, but in full color with sound.

NARRATOR: Tell John McCain to get his facts straight. America deserves better.

Smiling picture of Obama.

OBAMA: I'm Barack Obama, and I approve this message.

This ad succeeds by making John McCain look like a liar, which he is, and by forcing McCain to explain his misleading claims. McCain's campaign would try to come back and say they were talking about troops in Germany, not troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. But as Blankley said, "if you are explaining, you are losing".

1. good ad, but I think it's more likely
that one of the few non Right-Wing 527 groups like MoveOn or VoteVets would run something like this.

4. How is it negative? it's the TRUTH!
There are no lies or opinion, just facts!
So where is the negative?!

5. It is an attack ad, pure and simple
Rather than touting Obama's positives, it attacks McCain's negatives. Truth or not, that makes it negative campaigning.

Would a very similar ad about Obama be acceptable as long as it was true, or would you be screaming about McCain's negative campaigning?

6. You still havent answered my question, HOW is it an attack ad?
It's TRUE!!
How is the truth EVER an attack?!
By YOUR way of reasoning we should just dance around, throwing flowers and honey for the GOP and coronate them!

well FUCK BEING POSITIVE! I WANT TO WIN AND BEAT THEM AT THEIR OWN GAME WITH THE TRUTH!

THEY LIE... WE tell the TRUTH!

An attack ad is LYING or misrepresenting the facts!

8. It is negative, it attacks McCain. Truth is not the point
And you have not answered MY question: Would a nearly identical ad against Obama, equally true, be negative campaigning? Why or why not?

9. Truth is EXACTLY the POINT! THAT is what separates US from THEM!
And THEY ARE attacking US, CONSTANTLY,
THEY are attacking our potential VP, THEY are ATTACKING US, THEY INSULT US, hell, THEY JUST KILLED 2 FUCKING PEOPLE WHILE BLAMING US!!!

They attack us with LIES, WE Attack them with TRUTH!

and it DOES matter! IT MATTERS A WHILE FUCKING HELL OF A LOT!

They have NEVER used the truth, PURE truth, the way we can, because they KNOW it would never work. If they used the TRUTH, FACTS based on the actual situations, they would never win another election again!

SO yes... it DOES matter, and you STILL have not really explained HOW it's an attack AD, if it's HONEST!?

15. So the Obama campaign's promise to avoid negative campaigning was a flat-out lie?
Wow, that really sets Obama apart from McCain, doesn't it. :eyes:

No support from The Obama campaign, so you're getting YOUR panties in a twist over nothing.
you can't defend your position, you can only attack. sad.

12. Oh, please. Obama needs to counter McCain's distortions of him!
If he didn't, we'd be screaming about it. Jesus! That's basic politics.

3. Just saw a different counter this morning
McCain has been running ads a little here in PA and one of them had a few points, one of which was basically "who is keeping your gas prices high by not supporting a gas tax holiday?" with a crowd chanting O Bam A O Bam A with Obama's picture.

The counter I saw this morning starts with that and stops and the narrator goes "John McCain is blaming Obama for high gas prices? Same old politics. Barak Obama supports blah blah blah"

basically calling McCain on all his lies and putting out the truth.

10. It is a negative ad
And I wish MoveOn would run it. There is no chance Obama will run an ad like this. But I think it needs to be heard.

11. Well, VoteVets would probably be better
But, yes, McCain has been given an overwhelming free pass at this.

I do also believe that the Dems need to get out there more aggressively. They have to point out McCain's lies. The MSM sure won't. It's sad, but true. And, no, I don't think pointing out your opponents lies is negative campaigning. If it's true, it's fair game.

18. I love it, but I would add...
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 05:16 AM by DangerousRhythm
the clip of McCain and the little girl asking him if he'd raise taxes, his response, "No", followed by his recent "it's not off the table" remark. Of course that'd make the runtime 10-20 seconds longer probably, but hey... people need to know. Maybe a separate ad? :D
