During the 2000 South Cariolina primary, McCain expressed support for the people of South Carolina's decision to fly the confederate flag over the state house and other government buildings.

After McCain was defeated, he publicly admitted that he lied about his position in order to curry for votes in that state during the primary.

Former GOP presidential candidate John McCain called for the removal of the Confederate battle flag from atop the South Carolina Statehouse on Wednesday, acknowledging that his refusal to take such a stance during his primary battle for the Palmetto State was a "sacrifice of principle for personal ambition."
