1. This is the only post I've seen about Bayh that makes any sense.
Why indeed.

3. He was thinking of running for Prez himself, remember--but walked away
from it to support the presumed nominee, Hillary, with the probable offer of VP. Who would have thought that the Clinton machine would break down? Now he's latching on to Obama like a ramora to a shark.

4. I don't want him but the reason he's mentioned is...
because he is from Indiana, a state the Dems are given at least a chance to win for the first time since 1964 and also, I suspect, because he was a HRC supporter and it might be considered a bone to her and her supporters if Obama choose one of them as his running mate.

16. So what about Indiana? Why not Iowa or Missouri or Alabama or Oregon
or any of those other 50 states.

20. I'm not sure I understand your point.
Indiana is a state that Dems haven't won since '64 and have a real shot at winning this time and I suspect that is why he is on the list. I'm not advocating Bayh just giving my thoughts as to why he is mentioned. As for Iowa and Oregon it seems like Obama has a good shot at winning those states. Alabama is probably not in the cards. Missouri is a toss up, but I haven't heard McCaskill being talked about too much as a VP.

26. I don't see why Indiana is so important to a Democratic victory
As you say, it hasn't been since 1964. Why all of sudden is it so important in 2008 that we get saddled with a boring VP pick because of it? It makes no sense.

21. That's the usual meaning of "purist" by many here, especially the DLC types
but that one in particular (and two others) have been specifically shilling for the Republican Chuck Hagel.

9. Because he's one of those middle of the road types that they all fawn over
The media is in love with the mythical idea of the rational moderate who reaches across the aisle. They believe it will create a fairytale world where everybody will get together, hold hands, and eat chocolate bunnies while they solve the country's problems.

The problem is the Dems that are "centrists" always capitulate to the bad policy of the Far Right. It isn't really the other way around. The Right frames everything, it has since the rise of Movement Conservatism, when the country's politics took a hard turn to the Right and we stopped doing business the way we used to do business, with a general consensus that built up the middle class etc.

But the media loves these guys like Bayh who never want to rock the boat on anything or fight for a principled progressive policy. They capitulate to be nice and stand and fight for nothing. When Norquist said that "Bipartisanship is another name for date rape" he meant it. And the media loves seeing Dems getting raped while they have a big smile on their faces and then they get up and shake hands with the guys who did the raping. Bayh is a poster boy for that fuzzy little buddy buddy world.

Plus he's your typical bland Democrat who has a family legacy in politics and these media nerds love that shit, even though Bayh doesn't actually bring anything to the table electorally.

14. He hits a lot of items on the checklist.
Moderate
Two-term governor (cut taxes AND produced a budget surplus)
Second-term senator
Very popular in a red state
Foreign policy experience (member of both armed services and intelligence committees)
Telegenic

The idea is that Bayh would broadly be seen as "ready on day one", would reassure independents and middle-of-the-roaders, might bring Indiana and might appeal elsewhere in the Midwest, and would be represent a step towards party unity (as he was a prominent Clinton supporter).

Bayh is boring, dumb and weak, a perfect counterweight
to Obama's intelligence, charisma and strength.
