"Referendum on Barack Obama": The Unchanging Line of BS

RKA wrote a Diary about the Media's decision to tell us what this election was really about on July 7, 2008.

http://www.dailykos.com/...

At that time, I thought that if I heard this mindless platitude from the corporate media again, I was going to scream.

But they're still at it:

This is not going to be pretty, but the election is going to be a referendum on Barack Obama, like it or not.

http://www.townhall.com/...

It seems to be consensus that this election has become a referendum on Barack Obama.

Dartagnan's diary :: ::
The notion that McCain's case matters flies in the face of what some people (including me) believe about the fall campaign: that it's going to be a referendum on Barack Obama. Do voters believe that he's up to the job?

http://nymag.com/...

The hard truth for the McCain campaign is that this election will ultimately be a referendum on Barack Obama.

http://www.nashvillecitypaper.com/...

Bob Schieffer chimes in, at least recognizing the existence of the meme:
http://newsbusters.org/...

SCHIEFFER: Well, this is what the McCain people were trying to do. They were trying to make this a referendum on Barack Obama. And I think to a certain extent they have succeeded in that. Now, where they go from here

And TODAY, from Politico, Quinnipiac pollster Peter Brown:

http://news.yahoo.com/...

"This election is about Barack Obama — not John McCain — it's about whether Barack Obama passes muster. Every poll shows that people want a Democratic president, the problem is they’re not sure they want Barack Obama."

And yet again, from SALON:

http://www.salon.com/...

Schaller: It's funny, I have heard repeatedly from pundits, and I think that they're right about this, that this election is mostly going to be a referendum on Obama.

They've got their story and they're sticking to it. Whenever you hear this meme (and you will continue to hear it), why not take the time to remind the source that this election is NOT a Referendum on Barack Obama.

It is a Referendum on 4200 soldiers killed in Iraq, and the tens of thousands wounded, maimed, blinded or crippled, and their families.

It is a Referendum on Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, waterboarding, rendition and torture of other human beings, many of whom were completely innocent of any "crime."

It is a Referendum on four dollar a gallon gasoline

It is a Referendum on the abandonment of an entire American city as some sort of grand conservative "experiment."

It is a Referendum on Jack Abramoff, and all his friends in the Republican Party who now claim they never knew him.

It is a Referendum on an Unnecessary War based on Lies.

It is a Referendum on "Fixing the facts around the policy."

It is a Referendum on propping up dictators who harbor terrorists.

It is a Referendum on pointlessly building more nuclear weapons.

It is a Referendum on tax cuts for millionaires.

It is a Referendum on creating the largest Wage Disparity since the 1920's.

It is a Referendum on out-of-control, crippling health care costs, dumped on individual workers.

It is a Referendum on food prices, oil prices and heating bills inflated due to pointless belligerence towards Iran and a botched, unnecessary invasion of Iraq.

It is a Referendum on inadequate armor and vehicles for our troops in the field.

It is a Referendum on Walter Reed Hospital.

It is a Referendum on Terry Schiavo.

It is a Referendum on lying about the poisonous air in New York City after the WTC attacks.

It is a Referendum on failing to capture or kill the murderer responsible for those attacks.

It is a Referendum on ignoring clear warnings of the impending attacks.

It is a Referendum on turning the EPA and BLM into enablers for polluters and the mining industry.

It is a Referendum on corrupting the Justice Department.

It is a Referendum on utter failure to engage in a Mideast Peace Process.

It is a Referendum on alienating our Allies and turning our country into a pariah in the International Community.

It is a Referendum on the spiraling housing crisis and subprime mortgage debacle.

It is a Referendum on bailing out Bear Stearns and leaving victims of predatory lenders stranded and foreclosed.

It is a Referendum on ignoring the Rule of Law and mocking the inherent powers of Congress.

It is a Referendum on voter intimidation, Swiftboating, and election fraud.

It is a Referendum on Mark Foley and Republican coverups of Mark Foley.

It is a Referendum of David Vitter and Larry Craig, and all hypocrites in the Republican Party.

It is a Referendum on offering a couple million dollars of foreign assistance for a catastrophic Tsunami, then being shamed into offering more.

It is a Referendum on polluting our lakes, rivers and streams with sewage and runoff from Mountaintop mining.

It is a Referendum on vetoeing health care for children in favor of lining the pockets of the oil companies.

It is a Referendum on lying to the citizens about the consequences of climate change and Global Warming, in favor of lining the pockets of the oil companies.

It is Referendum on shooting war protestors with plastic bullets and calling them "traitors" on your propaganda outlets.

It is a Referendum on Jessica Lynch, Pat Tillman and all the other victims of war propaganda.

It is a Referendum on outing CIA agents, and pardoning the Criminals who abetted the outing.

It is a Referendum on dumping a failed war on your successor, with no clear exit strategy.

It is a Referendum on dumping a failed economy on your successor, with no plan to save the American people from the consequences of your incompetence.

In short, it is a Referendum on the Presidency of George W. Bush and the consequences of eight years of Republican policies.

That is the "Referendum." And it's no fucking game.

1. This isn't necesarrily a bad thing and is probably true
Honestly, who really WANTS to vote for John McCain? Who really WANTS to keep the same party in charge that has been so destructive the past 8 years?

People are willing to vote for a change, yet it is true that Obama has pretty much come out of nowhere during the last 4 years.

Even die-hard political junkies never knew about him before the 2004 DNC convention.

Obama just has to show people that he is trustworthy and knows what he's doing. The race may be tight up until the very end ala Reagan vs. Carter.

3. This would be the first time in history an election was a referendum
on a challenger from the party that's out of power. Elections are a referendum on a candidate when the candidate is an incumbent running for re-election. You could fairly argue that its a referendum on the last 8 years of Bush and whether we should continue those policies.

This is nothing but an excuse to give critical, unfairly harsh coverage to Obama, while giving McCain a free pass. This is extreme bias.
