It's actually not a debate. I was curious what exactly the format would be and found the following. Some of you may be curious too. http://hootsbuddy.blogspot.com/2008/08/saddlebacks-civil-forum-with-mccain-and.html

1. It's not a debate at all. |
|
It is merely an interview by this religious guy who calls himself a doctor. In a church to promote more religious insanity and force Christianity into the Presidential election.
I think I will avoid it.

2. I think any appearance with Obama and McCain together is good.. |
|
it will highlight the stark contrasts in appearance, stature, poise, intelligence, age, etc.

4. Together on stage only for pictures |
|
But I believe you're right about being able to see the contrasts... anyway.

As other DUers have done a lot more eloquently than I have been able to, the REALITY of politics in America in 2008 is that in the elective process at the presidential level, the religious elements HAVE to be addressed as much as any one of 100 other elements ...
BO is smart, and he knows this ... He has from the VERY OUTSET of his campaign talked openly of his faith ... He KNOWS that among the MANY institutionalized negatives that ALL D candidates get labeled with, "hating religion" is one of them ...
McCain's candidacy has been problematic relative to the moderate/independent vote - WE know the guy is batshiite crazy and a LOT more right wing than people want to believe, BUT the MSM has successfully packaged him as a moderate, and part of the reason why this thing is a lot closer than it should be is that he, unlike pretty much any other R, is pulling in his share of Indy's ...
HOWEVER, that comes with that, is that unlike most of the other Rs who would have had more problems with Indys - he has not spent his career packaging himself as a bible thumper ...
That means that BO HAS to adjust and run with what opening he has to appeal to none crazed fundies ...
All of that being said ...
IMO, Warren is one of the good guys here ... I am a little familiar with him in general, his brand is INFINITELY different than the normal fundie hater ...
I have also seen some interviews with him in the runnup to this, and in my opinion, he is playing it straight ... Frankly, I get the sense that he genuinely feels BO is a good guy and I don't think he much cares for McCain ...
Hey ... Last we saw a "debate" there were puke bag "journalists" Stephanopolis and Gibson who bushwacked the heck out of BO ...
IMO, I have no problem with someone who has Warren's level of influence among a LOT of good and decent people having a forum to put BO and McCain up against each other ... Frankly, I think he is going to do a lot better job than 90% of the hack "media" whores who get the job ...
