Has McCain ever referred to the Vietnamese as anything other than "The Enemy"?
Given that the Vietnam War was presented as a feint by the Soviet Union , does he still think of Russia as "The Enemy"?

4. He hates them, and will hate them as long as he lives.
"I hate the gooks," McCain said yesterday in response to a question from reporters aboard his campaign bus. "I will hate them as long as I live."

11. I have seen a lot of unacceptable crap on DU.
Edited on Sun Aug-17-08 01:53 PM by Warren Stupidity
But please do not consign 'lots of vietnam vets' to the same racist asshat category that McCain is in. A brief google of DU indicates that this is not common usage here, other than in discussions regarding McCain's racist bile and the derogatory nature of the term 'gook'.

12. Uh... it's just plain true. Lots of Vietnam vets continue to refer to Vietnamese folks as "gooks"...
At no point did I make any claim about it being "common" on DU.

16. None that I know.
That was my generation, and I can't actually recall the last time I heard or saw the term gook used by anyone outside of discussions here on DU. It isn't just plain true, it is just plain your opinion that it is true.

25. I give up on what your point was.
gooks is not used here on DU any more than nigger is used here on DU - it is considered unacceptably offensive by everyone here, regardless of their vietnam service. It is a vile racist term and defending McCain's use of it by claiming, as you did that vietnam veterans routinely use that word here on DU, is insulting.

"Lots of Vietnam vets do that - I've seen it on DU." - that's bullshit and insulting.

18. Have any of the Democratic Vietnam Veterans?
Kerry was offended with the usage even in Vietnam from the journals and letters quoted in Tour of Duty. I have never read any of the Democratic vets in Congress speaking that way.

13. When he says "Bomb, bomb, bomb.. bomb Iran," he really means bomb Vietnam
McCain is stuck in Southeast Asia, perhaps convinced that the US could had won that war if we had just bombed them until there was no one left alive.

24. It's rather ironic considering that the disaster on the Forestall was
directly tied to the pressure to bomb the hell out of Viet Nam. The initial rocket mis-fire happened because safety steps were omitted in an effort to get the jets launched faster. What should have been a minor incident turned into a disaster because the jets were carrying unstable WWII era bombs. Those bombs were dragged up out of storage in the Philippines because the munitions factories couldn't keep up with the demand.

9. I have no idea of how much support China gave to Viet Nam,
but the mantra of the time was that everything was being run out of the Kremlin as part of a massive plan to take over the world.

22. Never.
Viet Nam to this day is afraid of Chinese hegemony; that is why they allied themselves with the USSR at the time.

To this day, Chinese maps of "Greater China" include most of SE Asia, including Viet Nam.
