Why does anyone need 7, 8 or 11 houses?!?!?

I will admit I have never been wealthy. But I did grow up with some kids from wealthy families so I am not completely ignorant as to how the rich live. But I have never known anyone who owned more than 2 houses - one to live in and one at the lake or some vacation spot. The one exception I know of is my sister and her husband. They have a house here and a house in England because my BIL spends time in England for his job. After a few years and as his time spent there increased, they decided to buy a house there to save money on hotels and renting apartments.

But seriously why does anyone need so many houses? Do they just go on vacation all the time? Are all these extra houses investments or tax write offs?

I recently read a biography of Doris Duke and as wealthy as she was, she only owned 4 houses. And she traveled all the time.

So does anyone understand why the McCains own so many homes?

1. Because she can. She has the money, she likes to shop, decorate, too,
I imagine, and that's the lifestyle of the rich and bored.

5. You can't just fly your private jets around in a circle and come back to the same place.
You have to fly them somewhere!

6. Are they investments? Lots of people put money into real estate when the market is down.

7. It reminds me of all those castles the royal family has in England.
They're always wintering or summering at one or another of them. Maybe that's what John and Cindy do with their various homes.

9. Nobody "needs" that many homes.
Wants and needs should not be confused - that's how we get duped and suckered in all sorts of costly and unfortunate ways.

They *want* that many homes primarily for the status, ego-validation, and self-aggrandizement it provides. Simple convenience may also be a factor, but not a big one. There are good hotels in every city.

17. Intelligent reply. You pretty much nailed the....
...the salient points. Wants vs. Needs and motivation, etc.

11. I don't really get it either.
I have known a couple of extremely wealthy people and like you said there was a home and then a cabin on a lake or a house in the mountains or something like that. I don't grasp all these homes, which seem to be places that they go to and stay in.

are addicted to housing.

Real shame Idiot II made such a dumb comment during a housing crisis. Just very sad. Poor old white haired dude.

16. Well, my friends....

There are some days, my friends, that you need to be in Phoenix, and some days you need to barbecue in Sedona, and have room for all of my friends, and of course being a senator, you need a house in Washington DC, and then there's the vacation houses, my friends. You can't have just one! Drill drill drill!! 100 years of war!! I'm the real President! I'm Luke Fucking Skywalker and I hate those gook cunt trollops!!
