Granted, we've all been spoiled by Obama (and others), but the Convention tonight is like public access talent hour.

...and it goes on for hours and hours...

33. So far they haven't been too compelling
But of course the speakers get better as the night goes on. I'm guessing that some of them have poor eyesight (Rendell's speech comes to mind) so they aren't very good at reading the teleprompters.

Yes, an enthusiastic response from them is fantastic...especially because this is our one big "commercial", but I'm not worried that this is a make-or-break thing...I just think we could have done a lot of tonight's presentation better.

Towards the end of his speech, after saying mccain is not a friend of the disabled, he said something like "If Barack Obama gets to the white house, we will have 4 more years of the same, staid policies" He followed with "When Barack Obama gets in the white house, things will improve..."

My son and I caught it along with a slight gasp from the audience. You did not hear it?

67. You've already conceded that one speaker was decent, you missed two...
And two or three of the most notable speakers (Schweitzer, Clinton, Warner) haven't spoken yet.

So it seems like you could've just as easily concluded "It's me" and not posted this thread.

But, whatever.

"...I think my "point" (It was an opinion, not actually a "point") seems justified."

If it's not a point, why did you call it one? I certainly didn't.

In case you're new to this, the point of conventions is to highlight the noteworthy speakers - the keynote (Warner), the VP nominee (Biden) and the presidential nominee (Obama).

Nobody wants the 30 other speakers to upstage the main events. It never looks good. So if the others seem boring to you, that's a good thing. It means the people running this convention are smart.

That being said, I think Kucinich was good, Napolitano was good, Hoyer and Sebelius were decent, and Federico Pena is doing great right now.

So maybe you just need to watch it some more.

(I figure if you get to call me a bitch, I get to call you one)

...

..Schweitzer's kicking ass. He isn't 100% on his game, but he's got the audience involved. He gets that "Uncle Fester" look when he raises his shoulders (which I never noticed before) and his delivery is slightly forced at times, but he's definitely got the audience's attention...and he's speaking dynamically (and his speech is savvy enough to tie to McCain's "houses").

This guy friggin' rocks.

This is the kind of thing we need going on at the Convention.

Can't we find a North Carolinian who knows how to speak?

The Convention is, perhaps, the ultimate dog and pony show. It's our time to shine, more than any other. Shouldn't we be focusing on speakers who can actually speak?

Down-on-luck Eden woman on big podium

Speaking before an audience of thousands at the Democratic National Convention in Denver may qualify Gloria Jean Craven as a star to many, but she refuses to accept the treatment that goes along with it.

Craven was offered help with her speech, but she refused. The 56-year-old displaced Pillowtex worker prefers to speak directly from her heart, not a sheet of paper.

"I will say it like I said it in Raleigh or I won't say it at all," said Craven, speaking about the speech she gave during Barack Obama's visit to Raleigh last week.

Craven believes she must have impressed Obama's camp during that appearance. They called on her again Saturday, asking if she wanted to take her message national.

69. Just because it's been that way doesn't mean it has to be that way.
I hear what you're saying, and agree, but I don't remember Kerry having a slow night like this. The crowd really seems subdued.

Maybe it's me and my expectations.

71. I want to see that fire! ATTACK! ATTACK! ATTACK!
Plus, we have such an exciting candidate, it's like where's the enthusiasm?!

I'm telling ya', the Repukes aren't going to be playin' nicey nicey next week. I'm still pissed Romney and Giuliani are in Denver and crashed the party. They shouldn't have been allowed in. Ballsy mofos.

72. Dull as dishwater
they get a good speaker like Kucinich then you get a dull one but I think it's more the crowd. The speakers try to get things going but some delegates seem to be sitting on their hands. x(

77. It's not you
I think they've made a strategic decision to not attack McCain. To show only positivity. Hope it works better than in 04.
