I wish him well too, as I do every man and woman there.

I wonder if he'll serve for a year?

Is he in the Guard? If so, then he should serve 18 months

like all the rest of the Guard has had to do!

15. I doubt he's getting any special treatment from Bushco.
They don't give a flying fig about any of the people in the military. They've made that abundantly clear.

17. Senators can send letters of "protection" to the military and he is the AG of Delaware!!
So, if you think he won't get 'special treatment'... you are naive'.

But I :loveya:

Beau should be safe. He'd better be, as we will need him to replace his wonderful dad in the Senate.

7. from wiki:
Military service

Biden is a member of the Delaware Army National Guard, and serves as a Captain in the Judge Advocate General's office. In August 2007, he received notice that his unit would be deployed to Iraq some time in 2008. He is officially scheduled to deploy on October 3, 2008,<7> the day after his father participates in the campaign's only vice presidential debate. His father is on the record as saying, "I don't want him going. But I tell you what, I don't want my grandson or my granddaughters going back in 15 years, and so how we leave makes a big difference." <8>

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beau_Biden

This is very weird if elected officials can be deployed to Iraq. I mean, come on.

or did he just out-and-out volunteer? Because that would be odd.

26. Actually - no.
Beau signed up long before Joe ran for President.
Both Joe and Jill begged him not to.

You really think he would put his life on the line so his dad would get elected?
Haha- you're really funny.

Which is FIVE years before he ran for AG or Joe ran for president.

Sure Beau probably signed up to have it for his resume since Beau has major politican aspirations but geez, please don't do the repuke job here.

12. For a Senator, it is not unusual. Jim Webb's son is in Iraq and I think
that McCain's son is over there too. There are several Senators who have kids in Iraq. But I wonder if they will pull him back since he is now a vice presidential candidate's son?

34. There was an article about this in the Phila Inquirer
(many readers live in Northern Delaware)

Too lazy to look for it, but it basically explained that there are a very few jobs that will get you out of your Guard committments, and this isn't one of them. They said that there are other lawyers in the AG's office that can perform the AG duties, and it will fall on their shoulders, as it would if he were sick or temporarily incapacited (or running for higher office, as many AGs do).

42. Thanks -- now it makes sense: 1) he signed up in 2003, 2) he ran for AG in 2006
and go elected, 3) he got called up for service. I just wasn't familiar with the details, but now it makes sense. I hope his tour, if he goes, will be extremely brief.

Do you really think he signed up for duty OR do you think it may 'look good' for a Presidential Election?
He may be doing both but going there to JAG is a cushion job. The only weapon he'll be wielding is a pen!

35. People say "Oh Beau is in the JAG, that's a cush job"
well it is. But he wil also be in Iraq which is a dangerous country. And Beau, along with McCain's one son, are at greater risk because of who they are - they both would make great hostage material for terrorists. Thank goodness they'll both be in Iraq and not Afghanistan.

38. I cannot believe some of the posts in this thread
We've been reading story after story about the Biden family - not cashing in on JRB's position in the Senate - Jill Biden teaching college courses and JRB teaching as well - no one in the family is a millionaire - Mom lives with him - Beau is Delaware's Attorney General - Hunter a lobbyist for Hopsitals and Universities - Ashley is a Social Worker - his sister and niece work for his campaigns - he's the second poorest member of the US Congress with a net worth between $250,000 to negative $300,000.

BUT some here have decided that Beau joined the Nat. Guard to further his career AND is going to Iraq (wink wink) to further his father's career.

REALLY?
