"I thought it was becoming obvious," Gov. Sarah Palin said. "You know, clothes getting snugger and snugger."

The governor, who recently turned 44, told a handful of reporters as she was leaving work to expect a new member of the first family, then headed to a reception at the Baranof Hotel to feast on king crab.

Palin said she's already about seven months along, with the baby due to arrive in mid-May.

That the pregnancy is so advanced astonished all who heard the news. The governor, a runner who's always been trim, simply doesn't look pregnant.

Even close members of her staff said they only learned this week their boss was expecting.

"I thought it was becoming obvious," Palin said. "You know, clothes getting snugger and snugger."

But people just couldn't believe the news.

1. I have to admit
that when I was pregnant with my 4th child (fifth pregnancy-lost one) no one knew until my 7th month. I gained a total of 14 lbs for that pregnancy. So it is entirely possible. Now can we put this non-issue to rest?

5. Same with my spouse on our first child, and my next door neighbor's recent child.
Everybody wants to be Woodward and/or Bernstein around here, but they are coming across as Inspector Clouseau.

2. Isn't this the child with Down's Syndrome?
Edited on Sun Aug-31-08 03:18 PM by jobycom
You know, the syndrome that is rare to younger mothers but affects one out of every 19 children born to mothers 45 or older? I'm just wondering how much mileage we are going to get by questioning a mother about a child with Downs Syndrome. Seems like a less effective means of political suicide than getting videotaped having sex with a goat, but not much less effective.

6. If the baby was a girl, they were going to name it Bree VanDeCamp Palin
