Holy Shit, Kerry just went there...

KERRY: What John McCain has proven with this choice -- this is very important, George. John McCain wanted to choose Tom Ridge. He wanted to choose Joe Lieberman. He wanted to choose another candidate, but you know what? Rush Limbaugh and the right wing vetoed it.

And John McCain was forced to come back and pick a sort of Cheney-esque social conservative who’s going to satisfy the base.

What John McCain has proven with this choice is that John McCain is the prisoner of the right wing, not a maverick.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Senator Kerry, I’m afraid that’s all we have time for today. Thank you very much for your time.

2. ABC's This Week with george stephanopoulos
Kerry also said that "McCain is not a maverick, he is erratic", and that McCain wanted to pick someone else, but Rush rejected it (and then he said that McCain is prisoner of the right wing).

5. Bingo....

Just had the same conversation with my wife.

John McCain has been a prisoner for a long time. He is STILL a prisoner.

He came back from Vietnam and didn't like his circumstances. Cindy's daddy wanted a Congressman, and McCain became a "kept man". Daddy bought him a Congressional seat and McCain did what his captors told him.

Asking him about how many houses "he owns" is beside the point - HE doesn't own a damned thing.

And now that he has the nomination, it didn't matter who he wanted to pick.

McCain did what he's always done - what he's been conditioned to do - He did what his captors told him.

14. I keep thinking of those psychiatric records he won't release

He's a nice old amiable guy on the surface, but who knows what revenge he's capable of exacting when - for the first time in his life - he gets the idea that he's captain of his own ship.

19. I've Thought That
for a long time now.
I've known several vets, including an
ex BIL who are still "over there",
captives of their experiences, who are
still impacted by it in a negative way today.

Well said.

Kerry said everything he needed to say. And that McCain is a prisoner of the right wing because Rush vetoed McCain's wanting Joe Lieberman. Oh my stars!

18. You're right
But in his defense, remember --all through 2003 , we were unpatriotic if we said a word against the status quo. He did at least break through that. HE had a tough fight.

15. And what will the predictable response be from the McCain campaign?
"How dare you call me a prisoner of the right wing when I was a prisoner of war yadda yadda yadda."

Never mind that the criticism is a fair one and takes place in the present.

16. But that's the point. He was a POW and they DID break him
Edited on Sun Aug-31-08 09:37 PM by jberryhill
...and he's been a POW ever since. Only the captors have changed. He's conditioned to do what they tell him.

That's not a criticism of McCain.

It's a sad observation of his behavior and character.
