It's not the Hurricane! They don't want to have the Convention

Am I the only one that believes that it is mighty convenient for them to just blame it on the Hurricane?

This way --- no George, No Cheney, More time to vet the PTA President.

12. I've been away from DU for a few days

but I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I didn't see any thread today about the issue.

When I look at cable they are just saying how "thoughtful and caring" the GOP is to play down the
festival/celebration.

21. LOL! They don't want to have this convention.
Most elected officials aren't even showing up. They are a bunch of losers, but if you paid any attention to the MSM, you would think the GOP was moving along quite nicely. That entire party is in SHAMBLES right now, but they're putting forth a brave face. :D

5. Nope, you are not alone.
I think that they were having problems getting republicans to show up before McCain picked his VP, after he picked his VP, I think even less republicans were going to show up, and McCain knew this. It would look pretty bad, so the hurricane gave them what the needed, and excuse! No worries about a bad showing, and no Bush and Cheney talking about God knows what. Yep, McCain is one happy camper, and now he gets to use the hurricane for what he thinks will be a good "political" photo shoot.

The Republicans would rather face a hurricane than attempt to follow The Barack and Joe Show with the their two dimwits, Mr. PTSD and Ms. PTA.

13. They could have kept it going...
all they had to do is keep mentioning good wishes and prayers to the people of New Orleans. They could have even had Bush and/or Cheney tape a speech. The could have also had Lindsay Graham and Joe Lieberman go to the Gulf and feed back reports to the Convention. McCain should be the last person there, given the logistics of his large security detail. It looks like all the important Republicans like Bush, Cheney and Arnold pulled out, so why bother? I guess you can't have a party if no one comes.

23. Also Arnold Is At War With The State GOP . . .
So, if he were to make an appearance, there might be some animosity between him and the delegates. The State GOP wants to run a deficit, and borrow, rather than raise taxes. Arnold is trying to push for a sales tax increase to avoid additional borrowing, since California is already over-leveraged. Of course, a sales tax increase is tototally regressive, but an income tax increase is off the table due to the GOP.

24. I have a wild theory:
It goes like this:

The hurricane will reduce greatly the number of those who will watch the convention, since much of the focus will be on the hurricane.
This will minimize the impact or "bump" the convention may give McCain.

I know it's a crazy theory but it's my hunch.

28. I agree sorta
How can they compete with 84,000 Americans and 40 million tv viewers? Hell before Gustav, there were politicians reportedly not attending the convention. My (not really)senator libby dole was not attending. The repubs up for re-election in November do not want to be anywhere near St. Paul.

Then you had the bush/cheney problem. What the hell to do with them? The hurricane gave them an out and they are running with it.

My prayers are with the areas that could be impacted by Gustav.

41. You are right, but the media will spin it favorably for them
The media will say stuff like "Republicans were forced to cancel their convention because of Gustav", as if the hurricane came right up to Minnesota and they had no choice. They know they can't possibly compete with our convention, so they'll act like they really wanted to have the convention but nature intervened.

Recent events add to the reasons why cancelling or subduing the event is a good idea.
