My slightly madcap tinfoil thoughts on the Palin thing.
So far, I have only three theories.

1. Occam's razor comes into play and McCain did something incredibly stupid thinking it was smooth.

2. The far right wants someone else as president and the best way to accomplish that is to encourage McCain to pick someone who they know has is likely to be exposed as a woeful lapse in judgment or has something hidden in the closet that will cause his entire campaign to fall apart quickly so they can replace him with someone more to their likings.

3. Big business sees McCain as a huge danger to the status quo who will tip the scales so far to the right that a huge backlash would occur and thus have foisted this dead weight of a running mate on him to ensure that the status quo stays reasonably the same without a swing in either direction so they continue to skim the wealth of this nation without risking a huge pendulum swing to the left (ala...post Gilded Age crackdowns and worker empowerment).

1. Since were tinfoil hatting.
McCain decided on Palin to run against Hillary Clinton, who at the time, he assumed he would be running against in Februray.
When Hillary failed he thought she would still overthrow the convention, so Palin was still his choice, in June.
He made attempts to get Hillary to be his VP choice, in July.
When Hillary got inline he had been committed to the idea for 5 or 6 months or better so he decided we'll run Palin AS Hillary.

5. It's simple. They want to lose the election
They have everything they want. They've looted the economy for trillions and it's all sitting in offshore accounts. Congress is bankrupt and can't spend a dime on social programs. America is a theocracy. Industry oversite is a joke. The infrastructure is falling apart.

They want the Democrats to put it all back together again, hiring Republican contractors to do the work.

Then America will vote the Repugs back into place on some trumped up "law and order" or social issue.
