Records detail Biden’s draft deferment
DOVER, Del. | Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden received five student draft deferments during the Vietnam War, the same number as Vice President Dick Cheney, and later was disqualified from service because of asthma.

Officials with Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama’s campaign released Biden’s Selective Service records at the request of The Associated Press.

According to the documents, Biden, 65, received deferments while he was an undergraduate at the University of Delaware and as a law student at Syracuse University.

A month after undergoing a physical exam in April 1968, Biden received a Selective Service classification of 1-Y, meaning he was available only in the event of national emergency, “because of asthma as a teenager,” said David Wade, a campaign spokesman.

1. Here's the thing for us vets to remember: While Biden may have
five deferments, he has never actively championed going to war! Whereas Cheney's dick gets hard at the thought involving the country in another war...........

did Sen. Biden push the country toward war? Honestly. I'd like to know when.

2. AP wants to know why he hasn't "served his country"? What tools.
Asthma is a very serious disease. I suppose now they'll try to claim he never really had it.

4. in 1977 when I graduated from high school
I looked in to joining the Air Force and they didn't really want me becasue of asthma and allergies in my youth. Interestingly next year my brother joined the Air Force and he had asthma and allergies as bad or worse than I did.

5. Asthma as a teenager?
Jesus H Christ, When they drafted my ass they were taking anything warm and breathing! Hell I showed up with high bp and a hangover from a 3 week pre-induction bender and woke up at Fort Leonard Wood, that was in '66.

of any REAL or IMAGINED SIN from getting his deferments.

The world is a much better place since his life has worked out like it has.

7. Joe Biden came from a blue collar family - he had no one to pull strings for him
He was going to college and his first child Beau came in 1969. His deferrments were legitimate and as another posted stated Biden is not a warhawk like these repukes are.

10. Good for him!
Edited on Sun Aug-31-08 11:55 PM by Undercurrent

My first husband was a Vietnam vet. He was emotionally destroyed by PTSD, and later physically destroyed by rhabdomyosarcoma (a deadly soft tissue sarcoma) from his exposure to Agent Orange.

So for me, any man who was able to avoid being drafted into that horrendous, and immoral meat grinder called the Vietnam war has my respect.

32. Depends on severety.
I had it and was accepted for service. My was mild and could truthfully say that it never limited anything. But I was enlisting and they often looked the other way for enlistees. Also had flat feet but they waived that also.

21. See, here's the thing....
when people on this board, post things like that, we just feed the freepers. We make it easier for them to find things to attack us over. Sometimes, you just have to make a decision as to whether or not something belongs on this board. I could have lived without knowing this, as I'm sure many others could have too.

We need to stop and think before we just post willy nilly. That's my thought anyway. And, yes, there are a TON of things I have known, and not posted on this board, for this very reason. I'm not doing the homework for the freepers!
