AP changes "We will act as Americans, not Republicans" to "We will act as Americans, not partisans"

McCain on Gustav: We'll "Act as Americans not as Republicans"

http://www.opednews.com/articles/McCain-on-Gustav-We-ll-A-by-Dean-Powers-080831-658.html

by Dean Powers Page 1 of 1 page(s)

In an embarrassing gaffe, John McCain was quoted in the Houston Chronicle inferring that under standard operating procedure Republicans would not act in a way to help victims of a hurricane on American soil.

In a message following the cancellation of the Republican National Convention's first night on Monday, McCain said, "I pledge that tomorrow night, and if necessary throughout our convention, we will act as Americans and not as Republicans, because America needs us now."

AFTER

McCain orders convention curtailed for Gustav

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080901/ap_on_el_pr/cvn_convention_rdp

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent 50 minutes ago

ST. PAUL, Minn. - John McCain tore up the script for his Republican National Convention on Sunday, casting himself as above politics as Hurricane Gustav churned toward New Orleans. "We will act as Americans," not partisans, he declared.

President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney scrapped plans to address the convention Monday night, and McCain's aides chartered a jet to fly delegates back to their hurricane-threatened states along the Gulf Coast. Campaign manager Rick Davis said the first-night program was being cut from seven hours to two-and-a-half.

Officials said that as part of the convention's opening night, Laura Bush and McCain's wife, Cindy, would speak from the podium and describe ways to help victims of the storm bearing down on a region that was devastated three years ago by Hurricane Katrina. The first lady visited the convention hall Sunday evening to check out the podium.

"This is a time when we have to do away with our party politics, and we have to act as Americans," McCain said as fellow Republicans converged on their convention city to nominate him for the White House. Aides said Monday's program would be shorn of political rhetoric.

1. Hasn't the AP proven that they are totally partisan?
They need to be treated the way Faux Nooze is. Papers that carry AP news need to be made aware by their readers that this kind of crap isn't appreciated.

7. And the irony is that a different writer from AP got it right:
Analysis: Message is don't be like Bush on Katrina

By TERENCE HUNT – 6 hours ago

http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5g5v_DwpngB66z76vC8ILPIbGWCrwD92THLGG3

Three years ago, Bush flew over the devastated Gulf Coast and viewed the swath of destruction from Air Force One at low altitude as he returned to Washington from a truncated vacation in Texas.

In contrast, McCain and Palin detoured their campaign plane to Jackson, Miss., on Sunday ahead of Gustav's fall, and rewrote the script for their convention to emphasize a commitment to helping people.

McCain scrapped all but a few opening-day activities of Monday's convention session and said events of the following three days would be determined later.

"I pledge that tomorrow night, and if necessary throughout our convention, we will act as Americans and not as Republicans," McCain said, "because America needs us now."

By putting McCain's words in direct quotes that means that is EXACTLY what he said.

How can they change it?

You CAN NOT change words that are directly quoted.

Edit: They know exactly what they fuck they are doing....'not as partisans' is not directly quoted...they simply removed what McCain did say and changed it around to make it look better. UNREAL. UNREAL.

27. Did McCain say the word "partisan" or not?
It looks like the AP put that word in. If they did, it's a VERY SERIOUS misquote.

You can leave words out of a whole sentence using an ellipse (....), but ADDING words is a definite no-no.

14. Looks like the Houston Chronicle did a little "editing" as well:
I just went to Google and did a search (screen capture below):

As you can see, McCain's DIRECT quote is "I pledge that tomorrow night, and if necessary throughout our convention, we will act as Americans and not as Republicans, because America needs us now,"...

BUT...

...if you click on the link, this quote does not appear. It has been changed to:

""This is a time when we have to do away with our party politics and we have to act as Americans," soon-to-be official presidential candidate John McCain said from St. Louis in a video conference with hundreds of reporters here."

13. They keep thinking that this is the pre-internet-era...
And that there aren't hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions, who are going to notice this Orwellian bullshit.

But they'll keep doing it again and again. Faux, ABC, AP, etc, because they never suffer any consequences for their actions.

What can be done to hold the Fourth Estate accountable?

...people will do all kinds of things as long as they think no one is watching and they're not leaving a trail.

In this campaign, the media couldn't possibly make a more faulty assumption.

33. By not quoting and by using the expression "not as partisans" BY a particular Party's candidate,
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 06:44 AM by WinkyDink
the implication is THIS:

THE OTHER GUYS---DEMOCRATS---WOULD ACT AS PARTISANS.

It is a change that is most decidedly NOT innocuous.

Moreover, the AP didn't even understand what McCain meant. He meant it in a "we are not going to focus on ourselves and our Convention" way; AP took him to mean, "We aren't going to be Bush Re-dux in our response to THIS hurricane."

IOW, the AP inferred much worse than McCain meant, and THAT is why they altered the meaning!
