Sarah Palin tied to AIP - a group that advocated Alaska's secession from the US
She even addressed the AIP earlier this year - good diary on Kos. I won't hold my breath on it getting as much coverage as Jeremiah Wright, though...

What is Sarah Palin's relationship with the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP)?

As user Liz Arnett informs us, Sarah Palin may have some ties with this organization, and organization whose platform includes "complete independence and nationhood status for Alaska."

Perhaps the question of whether Palin, who's a 72-year-old heartbeat away from the presidency, may want to make America a 49-state nation is something that should have come up during the vetting process? Of course, given that the vetting process is just now getting underway, that the McCain camp knows about the possibility of this bizarre affiliation is doubtful.

98. Secessionist Sarah
Hi there, this is my first post here at DU, but I've been a big fan for many years. I think this AIP story has very strong legs and really want to see it get out. The other posters in this thread (and on Daily KOS) have some great info that I compiled into an email which I will be sending to all my friends and family. I hope you find it useful and forward it on as well... Let's get this out of the blogosphere and into the MSM.

Secessionist Sarah

Why did John McCain pick a Vice Presidential running mate who supports Alaskan secession from the United States of America?

Sarah Palin, John McCain’s surprise VP pick, belonged to the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP) before she joined the Republican Party. The AIP’s main goal is for Alaskans to achieve independence from America.

She addressed the AIP State Convention in 2008 stating, “I share your party’s vision”. You can watch the entire video of her address here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwvPNXYrIyI

And, here is a video of the Vice Chairman of the AIP, Dexter Clark, praising Gov. Palin for her former membership in the AIP and her support: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHFY1otOWjQ

Later, the Vice Chairman tells the AIP Convention to “INFILTRATE a Political Party if you have to…that's one way of doing it.” Interesting that Sarah Palin switched from the AIP to the GOP once she entered politics…

Why would John McCain, who says he puts “Country First” nominate someone who is clearly so un-American???

If you don’t believe me, check out this quote:

"I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."

-- Joe Vogler (Founder of the Alaskan Independence Party, who died in 1993 and was buried in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada, fulfilling a wish that he not be buried under the American flag)

John McCain admits he only met Sarah Palin once before picking her as his running mate. Maybe he didn’t know this truth about her. But, now that you and I do, I suggest we ask that John McCain choose a different VP who shares our American values, as opposed to someone who doesn’t even want to be an American. And, to make sure our voices are heard, forward this message to as many of your friends as possible!

re-alignment. Of course, they'll lie, cheat, and steal a "win" if they can, but Job #1 is to concretize their most reliable voters, so they have something to rebuild on and to offer re-cross-overs later.

25. Some nutjobs in the Lower 48 may agree with the AIP's stance
After all, the neoConfederates (and the paleoConfederates) are still fighting the Civil War, and some RW libertarians want to increase their population in some low-density state to the point that they're a majority and can then secede from the Union. Likely, there are lots of low-info voters who think secession would be a swell idea!

I don't have thing against her believing that AK should leave the US - or care that she holds that view with a bunch of other like minded people.

But a person holding such a view, ie that they do not want to be US citizens anymore, esp a person whose job is governing, is not qualified to hold a job representing our entire union of states. The VP/god forbid Prez job is about all of us in the all the states, and shouldn't be held by someone who doesn't want to be part of the US anymore. And the repubs start a false rumor and bitch that Obama wasn't born here, so can't qualify to be pres? Yet their Veep choice potentially may not want to be a US citizen anymore, and supports people in her state who wish their statehood renounced? This is getting too wierd.

Man, I'd love to see a transcript of what she said to that group in her speech. I guess when Palin said she didn't know what the VP did, she wasn't joking - running the entire nation, or even considering that we are a nation might have been discussed the day she skipped class in high school.

Ever since McCain announced her, I feel like I am living in an alternate universe.

32. BIG UPDATE - another Kos diary has video of Palin addressing AIP *this* year
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/1/4231/18477/878/581881

Look at the group's stated goals -

The AIP’s main aim is to secede from the United States, becoming either a territory or a sovereign nation. They aim to be entirely "self-sufficient" using profits from the oil and gas resources of the state.

On
their website, you’ll see this:

The Alaskan Independence Party can be summed up in just two words:
ALASKA FIRST!

And their 2008 platform:

To seek the complete repatriation of the public lands, held by the federal government, to the state and people of Alaska in conformance with Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17, of the federal constitution.

Also, the diary has another video of the vice chairman of the AIP talking about infiltrating national parties to further their own goals.

64. AIP Vice Chairman Clark: "She was an AIP member before she got the job as mayor".
This could be bigger than the Bridge to Nowhere.

"I was for secession before I was against it".

:wow:

70. Holy shit indeed! Go Symbolman!
That is rich! I hope Countdown covers it soon and often! This could be the GOP's "God Damn America" moment. Although I think AIP would parse it "Goddamn America!"

74. All I have to do is to be able to attend family reunions
but I'm seeing an "out" in Dexter's speech, as far as saying that Palin had moral or integrity problems..

He DID say that they should INFILTRATE OTHER Parties.. Republicans anyone? :)

I gotta get something going today and send it to KO and Rachel.. does she start her new show tomorrow?

We've got a SCOOP for her.. she can deliver the "death blow" (metaphorically speaking of course..)

Off to the Flash Work Room..

97. Hmm...if he thinks Palin has moral or integrity problems...
Any chance he might give you written documentation that she was in fact a member before she became mayor?

Then again, maybe he is well aware that she is part of the "infiltration" and wants to keep mum on the subject until after November 4.

I can't wait to see what you put together on this!

72. Statement of the founder of AIP
"I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions." - Joe Vogler, founder of the Alaskan Independence Party

Sounds Rev Wright'ish to me.

75. Joe was in the word they used "assassinated" I knew him
He was a nice man, had a real Statesman Feel to him.. a goldminer, and I mined gold there for two summers.. he was Torn from his bed, murdered and stuck in the cold ground for at least a year, no one knew where he was, it was frightening.

They got REALLY paranoid about everything, lemme tell ya.

I won't crap on Vogler, I'll quote him, but he was a good man, just wanted his own country, and up there, you can almost believe it could happen.

But NOT with someone like Palin at the helm, and if she WAS cheering these guys on, and I KNOW she was a member, if my bro-in-law says so then it's true, then she has NO BUSINESS as McCain's running mate. Like I believe you said,

"She was FOR Succession before she was Against it.." :)

Gonna use that in my video if folks don't mind, SO DAMNING..

85. How about THIS from their "FAQ"
Q: Would I lose my U.S. citizenship?

A: Depending on the form of independence, several forms of citizenship would be possible, including the retention of U.S. citizenship or dual citizenship. However, considering the moral, educational, and economic decay of the U.S., Alaskans' who hold themselves to a higher standard might very well decide to at least maintain an arm's length distance from a country in decline.

God Bless America, huh?

This is like the fringe separatists getting one of their own into the highest level of the "enemy" camp!

86. Isn't that basically the definition of un-American?
We should be running with this instead of baby-gate and hope it sticks. Can you imagine if this had been Obama, by the way? The Repigs would bury us in how un-American and treasonous it was. At the very least it should makes her look pretty mentally unstable...

90. It makes sense ......
Alberta here has most of the oil drilled in Canada, they were all for separating at one time too. Many still are, some my own relatives among them. It's called "we keep ours and screw the rest of you". Palin is so big on oil and drilling, I can absolutely see her being a former member of this party.

92. If she was a member, then this is the biggest scandal of all
I've looked at the website of the Alaskan Independence Party. These guys are really nuts. They consider the U.S. Constitution to be merely a treaty among 50 separate governments subject to being null and void if any member including the federal government violates that treaty. If Sarah Palin was or still is a member of this organization, then this more than anything else makes her seem very extremist and out of step with the rest of America. Her patriotism also has to be called into question.
