Sarah Palin. Soft bigotry of low expectations.
From message board exchange with a wingnut:

Me: Sarah Palin was asked about the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegience and she responded "If it was good enough for the Founding Fathers it's good enough for me".

Him: She wasn't talking specifically about the Pledge. She was talking about the religion of the Founding Fathers.

Me: Huh? She was asked specifically about, and her answer was about, the Pledge. She thought the Founding Fathers wrote it. BTW, what religion were the Founding Fathers?

Him: You libs all sound alike. Sarah Palin rocks and will get all the votes from Hillary supporters.

Aargh. :banghead:

FYI, the RW talking point on Palin's Pledge answer seems to be what the guy said - that she was talking about religion in general and not the Founding Fathers. Don't let them get away with it.

11. Are you offended by the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?
SP: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance.

4. Ugh. It's so disheartening.
I keep thinking "Not this shit again. They're really not going to go for the dumbass over the smart one again." The fact that this race is even close makes me weep for my country.

7. Thing is, he's not even very black. He's very light-skinned for a black man.
Like they care.

2. When the wingnut says "get all the votes from Hillary supporters" does
he mean all 18 million votes? Do they really believe that?

3. Yes they do.
They believe this despite the fact that Palin had to remove any reference to Hillary in her stump speeches because the crowd was booing. Yah sure, way to make the Hillary supporters feel welcome. :eyes:

9. Soft bigotry my butt
There is open hatred to any that support the idea of a secular nation. And if you don't happen to belong to one of the approved religions??? Don't even bother talking about it. You will be shut out of the process, shunned, and oppressed.

And that is what the right is depending on. The GOP depends on the religious right. Without it they don't have the votes. And the DNC plays at being the party of religion but all it manages to do is piss off its secular base and make the religious right giggle at them.

The original national motto was E Pluribus Unum, meaning Out of Many, One. And when it was changes to In God We Trust it was done so for exclusionary purposes. The McCarthy era intent was to separate America from godless commies. It was to divide our nation into believes and nonbelievers. And Palin is just continuing that fine tradition.
