why the Palin selection really worries me . . .
first, the Republicans are no dummies politically . . . they know that the only thing Palin brings to the ticket is a token nod to women . . . they have to know that she is completely unqualified to assume the presidency should anything happen to McCain, and that the number of voters she will attract to the Republican ticket is negligible . . .

so why would they pick her? . . . the more I think about it, the more I believe it has something to do with what her role would be in a McCain administration rather than what she can do to help him get elected . . . frankly, I believe that they know they don't NEED her help to get him elected because they've already got the election won . . . the fix is in, and whatever Palin does or doesn't bring to the ticket is therefore irrelvant . . .

just what her role would be in a McCain administration is something only he and his cronies know, but I can envision something like abolishing the EPA and assigning responsibility for all environmental matters to the office of the VP . . . or something equally odious . . .

the point I'm trying to make is that they understand that it doesn't matter who they pick for vice president because the election results have already been pre-determined . . . see RFK Jr.'s recent comments on this very issue . . .

and that's why the Palin selection really worries me . . . because it's McCain and the Republicans saying "What, me worry?" with full knowledge that they don't have anything to worry about . . .

1. It's gonna be pretty hard to fix this one.
The polls only reflect hhe last batch of voters and even here Obama wins. The amount of new voters Barack and Dean are bringing in is breathtaking.

2. The Palin selection locks in and energizes the Religious right.
That's one good reason to pick her. They were none too enthusiastic about McCain.

She also carries with her some of that "maverick" sensibility which is a big part of McCain's "sell" to Independents.

She also brings the idea of "doing something different and shaking up the ticket," which has got to appeal to McCain, and is probably meant to bring in Independents as well.

In my mind this is very clearly a political choice designed to help McCain win the election -- it's very much a "Hail Mary" pass sort of thing. "Hey, I'm losing so let me pick someone really different!"

Now, whether or not it will WORK...

4. Crispini!
Regarding the meme that McCain's selection shows they are the ticket of change, I posted this on another thread: "For all the talk that Palin is the pick of change, it's the motivation behind McCain's selection that demonstrates that there is no change. The last eight years have been full of thoughtless decisions based solely on politics & cronyism - & McCain is just more of the same."

This is the point we have to hammer home -- not the actual selection, but the motivation behind the selection.

How are you? :hi:

6. Hey! How are you doing!
Good to run into you! :D

I agree, we have to talk about how the selection is simply politically motivated. It won't help us with the far right wackballs, but hopefully it will work well with the reasonable elements of the middle.

I'm good, I'm running a campaign down here in Dallas. Having fun!

3. I don't think McCain's selection was made from a confidence of winning, rather,
I think it was made out of desperation. They were desperate to get Obama/Biden & the entire dem convention out of the limelight. If McCain had selected Pawlenty, Romney, or any of the other repubs that the media & the country are familiar with, it would have been a blip on the screen. But what McCain wanted was someone that would take his campaign front & center, someone who would completely over shadow any coverage of the dem convention & Obama's stellar policy focused acceptance speech. Palin provided that.

I believe it was a bad move that will alienate more repubs than not. That said, I agree that this election isn't in the bag. We are up against electronic voting & a media that is basically a mouth piece for the right wing machine. We have a fantastic ticket, but we still have our work cut out for us.
