Yep. That's right... I'm "concerned" |
|
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 12:48 PM by Crooked Moon
not only that, but i only have a couple of hundred posts. nevermind that i've been around DU long enough to remember that bush blew up the levees, that karl rove had an earthquake machine that caused the tsunami, that fitz was gonna indict rove and myriad other crazy bullshit theories that spiralled out of control and blew up in our collective faces.
i've watched and commented on the embarrassing circus this weekend surrounding palin and her children and am now amazed that, even with the revelation that it's almost certain that the whole theory was bullshit, the worst offenders are now claiming victory with the revelation that the teen daughter is pregnant, as if that somehow proves that the unwarranted attacks was a means to some alternate end.
however, now that the dust is settling and it appears that all we really have is an unwed teenage mother, i would once again caution (at the risk, of course, of freeper accusations, oblique "pizza" references, etc) that we should step lightly.
liberals, in the general sense, have typically stood up for teenage mothers (being that a commitment to "choice" implies that there are more than one). to attack bristol and, by extension, palin for the pregnancy is almost certain to be a loser for us.
the attitudes being expressed here, along with obama's "punishment" quote a few months back are already being juxtaposed with the "love and family" closing of ranks on the right.
it's foolish to proceed down this path.

This is WAAAAYYYY too common an experience to demonize it.
The other baby DOES seem odd, though.

13. But, then again, how often does a teenage mother |
|
give birth to a Down Syndrome baby? I'm positive that Trig is Sarah's baby. She was in her 40s at the time of his birth, at an age when the risk is much greater. It was general knowledge before his birth that he had this disability, but that in conformance with her beliefs, she had decided to carry him to term. All this rumoring about Bristol being his mother is really over the top, and not fair to the young girl who has done nothing to be subjected to this sort of limelight. She didn't choose her parents, she's really innocent in all this.

on the local news before the birth. She never got huge, but she just "looked" pregnant in the face and thick around the middle. I have no doubt that Trig is her son.

2. The internets forced Palin to fess up. She held her mothering skills out as rationale |
|
for her to be VP--turns out, she would rather put her daughter through embarrassment instead of turning down the VP slot. Turns out, maybe she failed her daughter in terms of teaching and supervision. Turns out, maybe she's not that great of a mother, which was a major focus of her VP resume. And you're bringing up an unrelated Obama quote? You don't sound like a Democrat to me.

Palin has no business promoting no birth control even between married people OR abstinence only education under ANY circumstances.
This just makes her more cannon fodder.

so shove the "don't sound like a democrat" crap up your ass.
my point, and it's a valid one, is that obama's quote was twisted to imply that teenage pregnancy is a "punishment" and that can provide a lot of mileage when supplemented by the hateful rhetoric here and on other blogs when compared to a saccharine-sweet "love and family" angle on the right.

11. Um, this has nothing to do with Obama's campaign whatsoever. |

You need to shove your concern up your ass. There's no hateful rhetoric here. This woman was not vetted, and opened her own family up to this scrutiny willingly, when she had the HUBRIS to think she could be VP and possibly President.

29. This is nothing like Dan Rather |
|
Dan Rather was duped by forged documents that were easily disprovable if you knew where to look. He was set up. Are you suggesting that Palin's daughter got pregnant in order to set us up?
Also: we are not Dan Rather. We're just kooks on the internet. Nobody takes us seriously for the good we do or the bad we do. Unless our shenanigans can be tied to the Obama campaign (hint: they can't) we've done no harm.
But, we've fucked up their campaign. Abstinence only programs lead to teenage pregnancy. Now we have living proof right in our oppositions would-be executive branch.
Not to mention, even though you and I may be more accepting of teenage pregnancies, the batshit-crazy fundie base is not. That kind of thing just doesn;t happen to good Christians, now does it?
Fuck 'em. If the roles were reversed they'd sure as hell be fucking us. Fuck them, fuck them, fuck them.

25. It doesn't have to be an issue for us. |
|
We can simply smile and applaud Palin's support of her unwed pregnant daughter, and get her to agree that every pregnant teenager deserves similar support. If we can't get her to shift her screw-'em official position on sex out of wedlock, we can at least force her to give some lip service to responsibility.

26. Yes, liberals have stood up for teenage mothers. |
|
And conservatives, ala Palin, have most decidedly NOT. But voila! When the shoe's on the other foot, suddenly it's all "support the child" and "it means nothing." Bullshit it means nothing. This woman has clawed her way through the ranks of hundreds of other RW whackos to get where she is. By denying information about birth control, what kind of situation has she left other young girls in? Other girls who don't have a wealthy, well-connected mother to lean on? It's hypocrisy at its FINEST, and I for one will not be silent about it.

27. We can stand up for teenage mothers and point out republican hypocrisy |
|
There is no reason for those two things to be mutually exclusive. Republicans are fast to point out the failure of Liberalism by pointing to the "problem" of teenage pregnancy. It is not condemning the child here to point out the ultimate hypocrisy and how it shows in their own words the utter and complete failure of a VP pick.
In my opinion you should be more outraged by a mother who puts her own political aspirations above the mental welfare of her pregnant child. It is the crass republicans political game and Palin's outrageous disregard for her pregnant child's well being that demand scorn.

28. Strange, I've not seen even one "crazy bullshit theory that spiralled out of control and blew up in |

our collective faces." Perhaps that's because I'm a bit of a realist, and don't think a few posts on DU are ever going to be earth shattering Dem destroying bombshells.
Color me indifferent to all the anguish about how some posts on DU aren't ultra-PC, and others jump to premature conclusions. Talk about over-reacting to every possible nit that a wing-nut freeper might pick with DU posters.

|
Jesus, how hard is that to comprehend? Where in DU have you seen any demand for a Scarlet "A" to be branded on the poor daughter? It's her right-wing, fundamentalist, anti-birth control, hypocritical, sanctimonious, unvetted MOTHER we're targeting. And going after Mother Palin is the right and proper thing to do.....
