For you kids that are not old enough to have lived through one of the most excruciating events in Democratic Party history you are now in the middle of what we went through in 1972. It was thought that the Senator from Missouri was well vetted until it was announced that he had two electric shock treatments for nervous exhaustion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_EagletonWhat then followed was an excruciatingly public search to find somebody to fill in for VP. Astonishingly no elected official would take it until Sargent Shriver accepted it. Shriver's most notable accomplishment was that he was a Kennedy in law and that he worked as an assistant to Johnson creating many outstanding volunteer programs and was the leader of the Peace Corps.
Well we are in stage one of the "wow what else is there on Palin" stage and it will get worse. The thing about Presidential Primaries is that they scrub all of the crap out and it gets bleached in public opinion. People accept it and vote for the candidate or don't and somebody else gets elected. The people are the most effective vetters.
Now McCain pulled a Quayle and picked somebody who wasn't a candidate. Rookie mistake. Pure stupidity.
Limbaugh punks McCain making him believe that there are legions of idiot Clinton supporters that are looking for, in Jon Stewart's greatest line ever, "Hillary Clinton's gynocological twin". Little stuff will keep coming out and it will create the impression of waiting for the other shoe to drop. McCain punks the news media and these guys who spent a year and a half thinking this was a serious exercise are not going to take the punking well. The media will go all out examining every blemish on Palin that can be supported and remembering every night they had to spend in lousy motels covering all of the guys who were passed over for VP.
Somebody will deliver the message to McCain, possibly this week - possibly saying that they will oppose Palin on the floor of the convention. And Palin will have a built in excuse - this time "spending more time with my family" will actually not only be true but in the best interests of virtually every single homo sapien on the earth, and that is something that is rarely achieved. The question will remain, "Can Palin remain as Governor of Alaska?".
The troopergate is the real deal. Fired the ethical supervisor and the evil ex husband is still in his job.
So the next stage will be going down the list and finding a replacement.
And all of the folks who were passed over for Sarah Palin will, almost certainly, say thanks, but no thanks.
And the search will be on for their Sargent Shriver. I am guessing Carly Fiorina but it could be Meg Whitman because they have no political careers to ruin and it will be good networking for them as they search for new jobs. People will thank them for their brave sacrifice, but they are smart and their better judgment may force them to decline.
Perennial Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidate Bill Wetzill should keep his resume up dated.
