Does Palin really oppose birth control between married couples?
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 01:22 PM by senseandsensibility
And if she does, this is an almost off the charts reactionary position. It should be screamed from the rooftops by the Dems. Suburban women, even repug ones, will not vote for this. That is, they will not if they KNOW about it.

Should we take a chance that the corporate media will enlighten them?

I thought we could use a semi break from all the pregnancy threads, and maybe discuss serious issues in addition to them. But we'll see...this will probably sink like a stone.:)

1. Just to clarify...
She opposes hormonal based birth control such as the IUD and birth control pills. There's a half-assed opinion among her crowd that life begins at conception, not at implantation. Since hormonal birth control prevents implantation they consider it 'abortion'. I don't know if they consider any fertilized egg that fails to implant a 'still birth' or not, but it would be the logical next step. In that case they'd have to be pretty busy holding services.

That said, most such folk don't oppose condoms, diaphragms or other physical means of pregnancy prevention. Only within marriage, of course, heaven for fend they teach their daughters enough about sex to avoid unintended pregnancy altogether. :eyes:

3. My 15 year old cousin attended a church that taught just that
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 01:55 PM by jane_pippin
Her mother wanted her on the pill but the daughter, my cousin, refused because it was too much like abortion. And you're right--she wasn't taught about sex at all, really. (She didn't live with her mother at the time but with another family member who got her involved in the fundie church to begin with, which is partly why her mom wasn't totally aware of what was going on or able to give her the information she needed to).

Guess what happened to my cousin? Surprise, surprise, had a baby.

It's really sad. These people surely think they have the best intentions, and that's all well and good for them, I guess, but they're so narrow-minded that they just can't see that however well intentioned they think they are, their ideas and policies are hurtful to young women and their families. And they're so married to their insane beliefs that even when their "educational" methods fail, they still cling to them as if they work. It's insanity. It would be funny if the consequences weren't so serious.

4. She wants Roe and Griswold repealed
Roe is based on Griswold. It was Griswold that established the principle of privacy. SCOTUS struck a Connecticut law that prohibited the use of contraceptives.
