The Religious Right is the GOP's Achilles Heel
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 03:57 PM by Az
It has been their strength for years. The thing that kept the GOP from sliding into obscurity. But the very reason that the fundamentalists stayed out of politics for decades is going to be the GOP's undoing. When you mix politics and religion both become tainted. Politics is a world of compromise. Fundamentalism is a world of dogmatic absolutes. The two do not play well together. And the GOP's hold on the Religious Right is breaking.

There have been attempts on the part of the DNC and others to woo the religious to the left. Its not worth the effort. It pisses off too much of our base and it does not sway the fundamentalists in the least. Add to this the fact that they are being burnt by their exposure to politics and it becomes pointless to try to pull them to our side.

Rather than trying to convince them to switch sides we need to return them to their dormant state. We need to show them that they are being used by a political party that does not have their interests in mind. They are being played by the party if big business. They are being used to line the pockets of greedy corporations. Keep reminding them of this and how none of the promises have been fulfilled and they will grow weary of politics and fade back into the woodwork of American culture.

1. Or, as evidenced by party affiliation statistics recently released, SANE Repubs leave
That's what happened to me and most of my family. Long-time Northeast R's who became embarrassed by the Raturist Right in control.

5. We are the big tent
We are the faithful and the godless. We are pagans and roman catholics. We are mormons and scientologists. We are America.

6. I've seen more pandering to fundies this year than all the past campaigns combined
Rather than reject fundamentalism and show it for what it is in no uncertain terms, this campaign seems intent on enabling and legitimizing it.

Moreover, it seems as if it's going to drop the ball on women's reproductive freedom issues, too- despite being handed a remarkable opportunity on a silver platter to expose Republican extremism in all its ugly glory.

8. Let the Republicans have them
-The hawks can figure out that the military and national security is stronger with the Democrats.
-The conservatives that want fiscal responsibility and can "do math" can see what Republican rule has done.
-The conservatives who want tax cuts, can "Do math" and makes under a million $ a year - we have a better deal.
-The conservative investors who want a stronger market can look at history and learn.

But the conservatives who actually WANT Armageddon and pander to an amoral Doomsday Cult that pretends to be Christian - they can keep them. Why pander to insanity?

9. Its better to just let them go back to sleep
Politics is too tied to the material world. That is the thing to remind them. Render unto Caesar and all that.
