"all families go through this." No, not all families have knocked up 17 year olds!

1. We don't watch Fox in this house.
Not now, not ever.

But I agree the "convention" so far is pretty hilarious, mostly because it's mostly not happening.

2. The GOP condemns out of wedlock teen pregnancy. Except when they
approve of it.

4. Mine didn't
but if we had I sure wouldn't want us all to be on the national stage.

I really question Sarah's commitment to her family by putting her daughter front and center on the national stage like this.

6. Many families go through it. Fewer would, if people like Palin didn't fight
to keep real sex education out of schools and to limit access to birth control.

10. Yes, indeed.
These are the people who insist on "Just say no" sex ed. Look how effective that was for the Palin family...

7. I want people to think about this
If the shoe were on the Democratic foot and it were one of our candidates children could you imagine the uproar? Could you imagine the mudslinging and the attacks on the Dems children?

The Republicans used Palin as a political pawn and a calculated risk, they calculated that Dems will be polite.

Rovian tactic #1 - exploit the generosity of the Dems.

12. Right on! and Rovian tactics apparently parallel with Machiavelli's.
Let's not forget HOW nasty Rethugs can be!

Does anyone remember the Shrub campaign smearing McCain, saying that McCain had fathered a black child out of wedlock? (The child in question was the adoped African (?) child).

How dirty is that?!?

And, they did the same thing to Kerry (swiftboating) and now to Obama - blaming HIS campaign for the Palin smears - taking a break from smearing him personally, I guess.

9. Not allfamilies..
...primarily the 'abstinence only' families. Many families make sure their teenagers are informed regarding safe sex and birth control.

15. This is a pretty handy example to hammer on their
platform and world view.I'd say Sara Palin might not be an expert on effective sex education.

These people hold insane views, it seems almost remiss to so not remind the American people of that. Their solutions are desire based rather than results based and that's not pragmatic. Most young women in Palin's daughter's situation don't have the same advantages as she does, I'm sure this grandchild will not be allowed to fall through the cracks and Governor Palin should as a public servant and leader should want the same for all Americans but she and Bush and McCain tell those innocent babies and unprepared parents that they are on their own, it's your bad luck that you weren't born born into a support structure with resources.

13. Even if they did
How many of them would accept a position on a national campaign for the Vice Presidency of the United States KNOWING this? Subjecting their daughter to that kind of scrutiny is insane.

They really need to "get" that it's the hypocrisy that's the problem.

17. Very Confusing! Even when you WANT to, how can you work with Folk who contradict EVERYTHING
they themselves say. They're either mistaken, lying, or stupid, so It's just NOT practical to try to work with such people; it'll drive you as crazy as they are.

19. Some even have "knocked up 14 year olds."
Many families do go through this, and it's not a shameful thing. In most cases (where the baby is brought to term) I gather, it's a joyous thing.

22. Of course, not every family goes through this
but enough do. Many on DU go through it, and many were themselves teenage, unwed mothers.

I've avoided the babygate threads (though, I still think grammagate is quite possible, and despite what some say, probable) but I finally have to come out and wag my finger. These threads do offend a great number of DUers, and I wish you'd take them into consideration at the least. I don't give a fuck about what FR or the MSM or the RNC say about us and the "liberal blogs" but I do care about our fellow DUers, even the 500+ I have on ignore that may be hurt by this.

20. interesting thought
because it made me look at this whole thing differently.

Would my mother ever had put me in this position? NEVER. No matter what. She loves me above her own success. She always protected me as best as she could (as Hillary did with Chelsea, I might add).

Before I was thinking this is a non-issue except for the education and contraceptive issues. Now, I think it's a character issue about her and reflects what her hometown people were saying about her. She is a horribly ambitious person with no scruples.

Take note-- she won't show such kindness in return.

I think the way they kept this secret is stunningly revealing about their values as well. Keeping her out of school so they could hide it? Why, if they are so proud that she made this choice? EXACTLY what kind of people are these Palin people?

It's hard as a woman to have a modicum of respect for a woman who would do this to her daughter. At the very least, it's bad judgment. Why not handle this honestly from the beginning? have some integrity and self respect and not shame your daughter by forcing her to lie.
