I really don't think Palin can survive this.
The McCain camp will try and tough it out, but if the ticket keeps sinking in the polls or if it's just a constant barrage of bad news for Palin, he'll bail on her.

He'll pick Pawlenty if that happens. And I believe it will.

Once it is official I think it's pretty hard to replace the VP candidate. But then again they've never been one to abide by the rules.

38. 1972, Tom Eagleton
Eagleton had undergone electroconvulsive therapy for depression. This was missed during the vetting process, and he was pushed off the ticket a week or two after the convention.

The Democratic National Committee met to approve the nomination of Sargent Shriver as McGovern's replacement running mate.

Gov. Palin, I think I would withdraw for the sake of my family. I do agree that the GOP may find a reason the yank her from the ticket.

33. That's the danger of small town living, EVERYONE knows everybody's
business. For me, it's not the fact that she's pregnant...I mean it happens in lots of families, even my own. But this girl didn't stand a chance. Even if the family doesn't subscribe to prescription birth control, shouldn't she have been told about other forms of birth control, besides abstinence. I feel this girl's choices were very limited, and I partly blame her parents for her predicament.

I swear, whatever bandwagon the Republicans are on this week, you can rest assured they're doing the very thing they're telling us not to do.

45. PREDICAMENT???? Maybe she WANTED to get pregnant!!!!!
Not sure why it is that no one considers this as a possibility. Lots of teenaged girls get pregnant on purpose. And for an amazing variety of reasons:
1.) to hold on to a guy
2.) to hold onto a guy's wallet
2.) to have their own baby to love
3.) to get attention
4.) to avoid school and/or college
5.) to avoid career expectations of pushy parents
6.) overt mistake/subconscious desire
7.) as a sign of their pending adulthood

Those are just the ones that come to mind off the top of my head. I'm surprised that anyone would even remotely suggest that Crystal might want an abortion when it isn't even clear that this was 100% accidental!!!!! And certainly no one has suggested that it's unwanted or unwelcome.

Remember, there's not all that much to do in Alaska when it gets cold.

32. I agree the sensible thing would be for her to withdraw for the sake of her family.
She should not have lied from the beginning to the people she governs nor the American public, and McWar is just stupid for not vetting her properly.

The repubs can cry fowl and "mean old Democrats" all they want, but it did not originate on DU. The fault is all theirs and whatever the fallout, it's nothing less than they deserve.

The daughter is the only person I feel bad for in this entire mess.

Peace

35. You got that right. Andrea Mitchell is reporting that a team of lawyers
has descended on Alaska for deeper vetting. WTF? This goes straight to the argument that Obama's been making for months now, John McCain's judgement is sorely lacking. This was an impulsive & cynical pick, motivated purely by politics.

47. This whole thing is a mess for the GOP
If she withdraws, it looks like the McCain team made a bad choice and didn't fully vet the candidate, which of course speaks to the issue of poor judgment. If she stays in, she runs the risk of sinking the ticket. Either way, they're screwed.

I do feel sorry for the pregnant teen who is being thrown into the middle of this, though.

25. He'll pick Lieberman
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 05:41 PM by Peachhead22
As Bill Cosby would say "The Palin pick was dumb, but not so dumb."

McCain wanted Lieberman all along but his advisers said "No, the evangelicals would bail." Now if he dumps Palin he can say to his advisers and evangelicals "I tried it your way but 'those nasty libruls' tore her apart."

He then goes for Lieberman and the evangelicals stay energized anyways just to spite our side. Ater all, we were the folks that used "dirty tactics" (at least in their eyes) against their lady.

Then we go on to still kick McSame's and Droopy Dog's ass like a rented mule. :)

46. That CNN has been crawling all over this in their two time slots says
that the "Powers that Be" are definitely going to try to ditch Palin.

I thought Obama's response about being the mother of a teen was very good. But, I was disappointed that Obama told the Lefty Bloggers to shut up and not get money to run ads against the Repugs like the Repug/527's and SwiftBoaters ran against US on the Dem side in '04.

I guess you might think that Obama is giving a "below the belt Okay" to Kos and DU and other blogs to do the dirty work...but, he doesn't want to have his "own hands dirtied by it all."

It's an interesting tactic. It definitely could win him the election.
